Microchip Releases Qi v2.0 Standards-Compliant Wireless Dual-Pad Reference Design

As major charger manufacturers, including those in the automotive industry, are working to implement Qi v2.0 (Qi2) standards, Microchip Technology has released a Qi2 dual-pad wireless power transmitter reference design. The new wireless dual-pad charging design - using fully-automotive qualified Microchip components - supports both Qi2's Extended Power Profile and Magnetic Power Profile with a single controller.

The Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) next generation standard for wireless charging, Qi v2.0, will soon be delivering on its promise of magnetic attachment, faster charging, higher efficiency and greater convenience as the first Qi2 mobile devices complete certification testing. In addition to an enhanced user experience, Qi v2.0 unifies the industry under one global standard. CES 2024 will be the global launchpad for dozens of new Qi2 products.

In response to growing consumer demand for improved wireless charging, the Wireless Power Consortium announced the release of the new Qi2 standard to redefine inductive wireless power transfer. Reflecting the enthusiastic industry response, Infineon Technologies is addressing the demand by introducing its first Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) charging transmitter solution and reference design kit REF_WLC_TX15W_M1.

Following the announcement made at CES 2023, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has released the Qi2 standard with the approval of the Qi v.2.0 Interface Specification by its Board of Directors. The release of the standard paves the way for WPC to establish a Qi2 Certification Program, enabling member companies to certify products as compatible with the new standard for wireless charging. This will be a major incentive for manufacturers and a major win for consumers.

At CES 2023, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is promoting the new wireless charging standard to unify the industry under one global standard and provide enhanced convenience and efficiency for mobile devices and wearables. As a key contributing member of the Wireless Power Consortium, Apple provided the basis for the new Qi2 standard building on its MagSafe technology. Apple and other WPC members developed the new Magnetic Power Profile, which is at the core of Qi2.
