Test Bench: The SW26DBAC76-4 Shallow-Mounting Subwoofer from SB Acoustics

This Test Bench article analyzes the popular SW26DBAC76-4 10" low-profile subwoofer from SB Acoustics, specifically designed (and patented) for applications that require a subwoofer that will fit into very shallow-depth enclosures. The SW26DBAC76-4 has a unique and interesting feature set that starts with an extremely shallow 79.5mm (3.13") cast-aluminum frame. The outside rim of the inverted cone is attached to the outside perimeter of the spider, and moves with the cone assembly. The inside diameter of the spider that would normally be glued to the voice coil assembly is then connected to the motor structure. This is a clever design.

The SB Acoustics Satori TeXtreme range using Thin-ply Carbon Diaphragms (TPCD) has now expanded to four sizes. So far the biggest commercially available TPCD driver using the increasingly popular technology, the SB Acoustics Satori 9.5" woofer with a 2" voice coil, is now available in 4 and 8 ohm variants. The thunder from the extended bass response of the new model WO24TX-4 and model WO24TX-8 woofers will no doubt be soon felt at hifi shows all over the planet.

Test Bench: The MD60N-6 2.5" Dome Midrange from the SB Acoustics Satori Line

This is a Test Bench of one of the most intriguing high-frequency drivers from SB Acoustics' high-end Satori line, the MD60N-6 2.5" dome midrange. This design by Danesian Audio of Denmark, is a soft dome midrange that features a non-resonant coated cloth, and a large neodymium ring magnet with a dynamic dome stabilizer and flow resistor. There is also an injection-molded back-closed transmission line enclosure, filled with Thinsulate damping, mounted directly on the back side, covering its entire surface. Most of our readers still remember Tom Perazella’s extraordinary egg speaker project with SB Acoustics Satori drivers, featured in the September, October, and November 2018 issues of audioXpress. Inspired by that design, Metz decided to build his own version, and also explore his own take with an active crossover tri-amp approach using a miniDSP 4x10HD system feeding a dedicated six-channel amplifier using Purifi 425W Class-D units. The Satori MW19TX-8 TPCD cone 7.5" woofer is the fourth TPCD diaphragm transducer to be explicated in Test Bench, the first being an Eminence compression driver and the remaining all woofers from SB Acoustics. The high-end MW19TX-8 has a substantial feature set with similar features as the rest of Satori series with TPCD cones, impressing immediately by its distinctive cosmetics and subjective performance, which this characterization illustrates.

TPCD is the acronym for Thin-Ply Carbon Diaphragm, which is essentially the technology developed in Sweden by Oxeon to create a new-generation material with properties that are now well-proven for speaker cones and domes. The Satori MW13TX-4 TPCD cone 5” woofer is the fourth TPCD diaphragm transducer to be explicated in Test Bench, and this one has a substantial feature set, including a single piece bowl-shaped TPCD cone and NBR surround.
