Volkswagen Adds AirConsole Multiuser Games to Vehicles

August 27 2024, 00:10
Volkswagen is the latest automotive industry giant to offer an in-car gaming experience that doesn’t require game controllers in vehicles. The Volkswagen Group partnered with Swiss gaming platform AirConsole to bring its unique in-car gaming experience to its drivers and passengers, starting with the new Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer. In parallel to the ID.7, ID.5, ID.4 and ID.3 product lines (from ID. software 4.0), AirConsole will also be available for the new Passat, the new Tiguan, the new Golf and the new Golf Estate.

AirConsole is an innovative video game platform that supports local multiplayer gaming by turning the car's dashboard screen into the console and smartphones into controllers. With no additional hardware required beyond what users already own, AirConsole offers an entertainment system to play casual games anywhere, with anyone, at any time.

AirConsole is the world’s first gaming platform specifically designed for cars. Since 2022, AirConsole has been pioneering this concept of in-car gaming, partnering with renowned car manufacturers and licensing exclusive content from companies such as Sony Pictures Television. The company, founded in 2015, reports over 18 million players using AirConsole and playing one of the 135+ games available on its platform.

The concept of a gaming platform to provide entertainment on the road gained popularity with electric vehicles that sometimes have to make extended breaks to charge. The new games of the AirConsole gaming platform are available on the infotainment display, which is transformed into a games console, and any smartphone can be used as a controller. The in-car gaming experience can be augmented by the immersive audio system in the car.

This means Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer passengers can also play with each other via their smartphones – just like at home with a games console and controllers. Volkswagen expects to launch AirConsole in the first European countries from mid-September 2024. By the turn of the year 2024/2025, the brand plans to extend the offering by several more games for even more European countries.

For the new in-car gaming experience, the VW Active Info Display offers the AirConsole app, while the connection between the smartphone and the vehicle is intuitively established by scanning a QR code on the display screen. The AirConsole platform supports multiple players simultaneously. The rear passengers can also participate in the in-car gaming fun during stops and AirConsole’s portfolio of games is tailored to casual players of any age. In general, it is possible to play alone or with all vehicle occupants together, but vehicles must be in park to enable gameplay.
