Speechly Releases Free Tool to Help Developers Scale Voice Experiences From Alexa Skills

December 8 2021, 14:50
Speechly, a voice technology startup from Finland, launched a new developer tool that lets users convert an Alexa skill into a Speechly application that work across the web and mobile applications. The Speechly application can be used to enable Reactive Voice User Interfaces across all major browsers and in mobile apps. The announcement was made live on stage, during the second day of the 2021 VOICE Summit in Arlington, Virginia. The tool was released as a public beta, with plans for quick iteration in partnership with users.

"We believe in a voice-enabled future where all companies can add voice user interface features into their own websites and applications, without the restrictions and data sharing requirements that come with developing in Big Tech-owned third-party ecosystems. Speechly's proprietary technology was built to give control back to the developers so that they can easily add multi-modal voice UI functionality anywhere with just a few lines of code. This latest release means that it's now even easier to get started scaling beyond legacy voice UIs," states Speechly's CEO, Otto Söderlund.

As Antti Ukkonen, Chief Product Officer at Speechly explains, "Everyone who has built a robust natural language user interface, be it a voice UI or a chatbot, knows that getting all the details right can take quite a bit of work and iterations. Also, while most tools for building natural language UIs are designed around the same principles (intents and entities/slots), getting to grips with the intricacies of each platform can be similar to learning a new programming language."

That is why, to lower the barrier of entry to Speechly from legacy voice UIs, the company introduced the possibility for developers to create a new Speechly voice application from an existing Alexa skill in a few simple steps. Exporting the existing Alexa Interaction Model (as a JSON file) from the Alexa developer console, developers can create a new application on the Speechly Dashboard and upload the model into the new application. The file will be converted to a Speechly configuration that can be edited as if it was written for Speechly from scratch. In a few minutes the application is trained and ready to try out in the Speechly Dashboard, from where it can be integrated in a website UI and business logic.

Speechly believes this feature will be useful for developers who are already heavily invested in developing Alexa skills, but would still like to evaluate Speechlys NLU accuracy. The tool is available in beta now.

Speechly offers a fast, accurate, and simple Voice Interface API for web and mobile applications using the company's proprietary technology that lets developers with no speech recognition or NLU experience to easily add intuitive multi-modal voice UI functionalities into any application. Speechly's proprietary Spoken Language Understanding solution, industry leading language models, and flexible API were designed to make it easy for companies to build voice features remarkably fast.
