Mackie Launches OnyxGO Wireless Clip-on Microphone and Mobile App

December 6 2021, 01:35
During the month of November 2021, Mackie announced a second wave of products in its Unmuted , which featured new professional powered loudspeakers, a new USB microphone, wireless headphones and more. By far the most interesting product among the announcements, the OnyxGo Mic ($119 MAP) is a new clip-on lapel design that transmits audio wirelessly via Bluetooth to mobile devices, working in combination with a dedicated OnyxGo app.

Essentially, the OnyxGO Mic is an integrated, compact, wireless mic and app ecosystem that supports on-the-go interviews, podcasting, live streaming, and calls. It is a completely self-contained, no-fuss wireless mic system, with no need for a receiver or added cables. Users can simply pair it, clip it on, and they’ll be ready to start recording or making calls. The companion OnyxGO app offers powerful capabilities like phone call recording, noise reduction, voice effects and EQ, AI-powered subtitle generation, and the interesting ability to mix the user's voice with Bluetooth audio.

In fact, the OnyxGO app is one of the most interesting parts of the new product, and which Mackie could very well build upon. It offers multiple recording and voice-enhancing processing options, which are vital for inexperienced users, avoiding problems like managing levels against background noise. The combination of a lapel microphone and built-in noise reduction is the best solution for that common problem. And the AI-powered OnyxGO app automatically generates a full transcript and subtitle file of the recordings, which is something unique at this price level.

Inside the compact OnyxGO Mic we can find a combination of a professional-quality built-in microphone, Mackie Onyx microphone preamplifier, Bluetooth module and antennas for Class 1 transmission, and headphone output for real-time stereo monitoring. In fact, Mackie even includes the budget CR-Buds wired earphones in the package. The light design clips directly to any piece of clothing, in the shirt's pocket or lapel of a jacket. Ideally, it should be placed as closely as possible to the mouth, at shoulder level.

The app-powered OnyxGO Mic records voice directly to the smartphone, while the app itself handles the audio and video recording for perfect synchronization and no lip sync issues. The OnyxGO App even handles phone call recording and allows mixing Bluetooth audio and the OnyxGO Mic signal. Users can even add digital effects, 5 band EQ, and reverb.

When thinking of other useful applications for the OnyxGO Mic, the existence of a headphone output allows monitoring the recording - extremely useful when working solo in the field and particularly in noisy environments - but more interestingly even for use as a wireless adapter for wired headphones or earbuds.

The availability of the Mackie OnyxGO is pending the launch of the OnyxGO App in the respective iOS and Android app stores, at the time of writing and audioXpress is also waiting for detailed specifications. We will certainly want to try it out in the field and check out the transcription workflow.
