Goldring Announces Ethos SE Moving Coil Phono Cartridge

February 6 2024, 00:15
All those that are serious about extracting the maximum potential and sonic possibilities out of vinyl record pressings know where it all starts. Cartridge specialists Goldring announced a Special Edition model of its flagship Ethos moving coil cartridge, which sits at the very top of its range. The new Ethos SE combines uncompromising engineering with unique new features to produce a cartridge of exquisite sound reproduction capabilities.
Thanks to a raft of exclusive and carefully engineered upgrades - including pure silver coils, low reluctance pole shoes and a black anodized, aircraft-grade aluminum body - the Goldring Ethos SE is the ultimate investment for those who care, setting entirely new standards in terms of detail retrieval, channel separation and low coloration.

The Goldring story began in 1906 with the supply of steel needles, springs and clockwork motors to the gramophone industry. Products were marked with a golden ring to indicate high quality of design and manufacture. In 1926, Goldring introduced the Jewel Electro, arguably the most advanced gramophone soundbox of its day. During the decades following the war, as home hifi became a reality, Goldring was always at the forefront of innovation. The brand quickly became the industry standard for electro-magnetic pickups, with its 500 series cartridge becoming widely used throughout the broadcasting industry. Today, Goldring continues to defy industry norms by producing high performance, premium quality, British-designed products for the specialist cartridge and turntable market.

The Goldring Ethos SE can be judged against cartridges costing a great deal more, and still deliver a complete musical experience - which has always been the Goldring ethos. The reasons start with the new pure silver coils that feature fewer windings with higher conductivity, reducing the effective tip mass and internal impedance of the pick-up for improved tracking and greater transient response. This is paired with a low-mass cross-armature core made from Swedish iron, which improves channel separation and produces a more realistic soundstage.

A vital line-contact diamond stylus features a narrow, low tip-mass, large contact-area that enhances high-frequency response and minimizes distortion and coloration. This vital-shank, nude design has a polyhedral, line-contact diamond profile, and is connected to the armature by a stiff-yet-lightweight alloy cantilever tube. And new low reluctance pole-shoes ensure smooth and extended frequency response via an exclusive process, while the low-resonance, aircraft-grade aluminum body was selected for its low density and superior rigidity.

Originally developed during vinyl’s initial rise to ubiquity, the GOL-1 generator ensures a smooth and extended frequency response and it's still handmade by Goldring. Exclusively for the SE version, the pole shoes have been subjected to a new process, which enhances the permeability of the metal, creating a lower reluctance magnetic circuit. This serves to flatten and extend the frequency response, especially in the upper registers where musical detail resides. The GOL-1 generator is fitted into a precision-milled 6082-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum body shell - selected for its low density and superior rigidity.

The Goldring Ethos SE moving coil cartridge is available for USD $1,999 or EUR €1,599
