German Physiks Launches New High-End Electronics at AXPONA 2019

Announced in late 2018, German Physiks’ new Emperor Extreme range of high-end electronics will be launched in the U.S. at the AXPONA 2019 show (April 12-14) in room 352 by their distributor, Distinctive Stereo LLC. The range currently comprises a preamplifier, integrated amplifier and stereo and mono power amplifiers and will be further expanded soon with a DSP and Digital Electronic Crossover unit. Knows for its unique omnidirectional speakers and the development of the DDD driver, the German company will now expand into electronics.

As German Physiks explains, the objective in designing the Emperor range of audio components was to create electronics that would match the company's unique loudspeakers in terms of the very high level of transparency, dynamics and musicality that they offer, and in the case of the power amplifiers, to be able to drive any loudspeaker currently on the market.

The Emperor Mono amplifier will deliver 1,800W continuously into 2Ω, so not only will it drive any loudspeaker but it will do so without any stress what-so-ever. At AXPONA the Emperor preamplifier (MSRP $19,750) and stereo power amplifier ($27,250) will be demonstrated with the German Physiks Borderland Mk. IV loudspeakers.

The Emperor Preampflier is part of the new Emperor Extreme range of high-end audiophile electronics. It has been designed to provide a perfect match with the Emperor Extreme stereo and Emperor Extreme mono power amplifiers. Careful selection of the input impedances and sensitivities, as well as the output impedances and levels, ensures that it will also work well with good quality power amplifiers from other makers.

Equipped with 3 balanced and 3 unbalanced inputs per channel, the unit allows flexibility for use in a wide range of system configurations. Each channel also has 2 balanced and 2 unbalanced outputs, making it easy to use in multi-amp systems.

The Emperor Integrated amplifier incorporates the same low level signal circuitry from the Emperor Preamplifier and the power stage from the Emperor Extreme stereo power amplifier to create an integrated amplifier of exceptionally high quality. The Emperor Integrated uses a large toroidal power transformer and conservatively rated reservoir capacitors, enabling it to deliver 600W RMS into 4 ohms with both channels driven. This ensures that it will drive any German Physiks loudspeaker and almost any other makers’ loudspeakers, while providing excellent dynamics and bass control. Large heat sinks concealed within the case, allow the unit to run continuously at high power whilst remaining cool, thereby improving reliability.

3 balanced and 3 unbalanced inputs are provided per channel, allowing flexibility for use in a wide range of system configurations. Each channel also has 2 balanced and 2 unbalanced preamplifier section outputs, making it easy to add additional power amplifiers when the unit is used in multi-amp systems. Direct inputs are provided for the power amplifier stage, allowing this to be used independently of the preamplifier section.

The Emperor Extreme stereo power amplifier uses a large toroidal power transformer and generously rated reservoir capacitors to deliver 600W RMS into 4 ohms with both channels driven, while providing excellent dynamics and bass control. Large heat sinks concealed within the case allow the unit to run continuously at high power whilst remaining cool, thereby improving reliability. Both balanced and unbalanced inputs are provided.

The unit’s gain may be adjusted in three steps via the front panel. Each gain setting provides a slightly different “voice” allowing the user to adjust the character of their system.  The differences, while not large are intended to allow the user to tip their system’s character slightly one way or the other and so provide some correction for an imbalance. These settings  include a Warm setting with -9dB gain, a Neutral setting with nominal gain, and the Analytical setting with +3db gain.

Likewise, the Emperor Extreme mono power amplifier uses a large toroidal power transformer and generously rated reservoir capacitors to deliver 1,100W RMS into 4 ohms, while providing excellent dynamics and bass control. Its very large output capability ensures that it operates with a healthy power reserve, thereby reducing distortion. It uses the same large heat sinks concealed within the case, it features balanced and unbalanced input and it also provides the same three adjustable gain settings via the front panel.

German Physiks is the brand name of loudspeakers manufactured by DDD Manufactur GmbH. The company was founded in 1992 in Frankfurt, Germany. The DDD driver is a wide-bandwidth, omnidirectional driver that uses pistonic, bending wave and modal radiation, typically covering the range from about 200Hz to 24kHz, so there is no crossover in the mid-range. The DDD driver has a very low moving mass, providing excellent transient response. And because the DDD driver is omnidirectional and has a very wide operating bandwidth, German Physiks loudspeakers produce well-focused stereo images that can be enjoyed from a wide range of positions in the listening room.
