Carl Tatz Design Employs IsoAcoustics Decoupling System in New PFM 1000 Series PhantomFocus Monitors

Studio designer and monitoring expert Carl Tatz, principal of Carl Tatz Design (CTD) from Nashville, TN, and the creator of the PhantomFocus line of Precision Monitors, and Dave Morrison, president and founder of the IsoAcoustics line of speaker isolation products, have announced the custom integration of IsoAcoustics’ award-winning pistonic decoupling technology into the new PhantomFocus PFM HD-1000 and PFM UHD-1000 Professional Reference Studio Monitors.

The PFM HD-1000 and the PFM UHD-1000 professional near-field reference monitors are the latest products from Carl Tatz Design and are intended dedicated mix rooms or control room/tracking installations, designed to be used exclusively in tandem with CTD's o-site installed PhantomFocus System. Both monitors offer the ability to handle high SPLs (115dB continuous) with lightning-fast transient response, and articulate detail.

The PFM HD-1000 is a passive near-field monitor in a low-profile D'Appolito design facilitating console/listener placement. It features two proprietary Morel 5.63-inch “Uniflow” aluminum diecast woofers with large 3-inch voice coils and a proprietary 1-inch ScanSpeak high-frequency tweeter with patented phase plug design. The monitor is available with the passive Straight Wire crossover and an optional bi-amp version.

The flagship PFM UHD-1000 is offered only in a bi-amp configuration and shares all the inherent qualities of the PFM HD-1000 Monitor, while its powerful bi-amplified configuration and woofer complement, introduces power and headroom, expanding on its effortless non-fatiguing precision character. Using the same ScanSpeak tweeter as the HD-1000, it is distinguished by its high-end ScanSpeak dual 5.5-inch proprietary woofer complement.

Both models feature a unique self-bracing trapezoidal cabinet with internal cross-bracing and tuned damping, and the custom-integrated pistonic decoupling system from IsoAcoustics.

“The PFM 1000 Monitors are presented by our company as the zenith of near-field monitoring, and IsoAcoustics’ continuous R&D successes in the world of acoustic isolation blend perfectly with our mantra of sonic excellence,” comments Tatz. “Dave and I dialogued for a couple of years about how our two companies could work together, and the new PFM 1000 Series Professional Reference Monitors are the fruit of that collaboration. We could not be happier," he adds.

“We are very pleased to work with Carl to integrate IsoAcoustics into this exciting new series of monitors and be part of his mission to provide remarkable acoustic imaging and performance,” Dave Morrison states.

PhantomFocus System
Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus System monitor tuning protocol offers studios a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room. There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus System implementation protocol, including phase alignment, system damping, speaker decoupling and isolation mounting, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to primary axial room modes, proprietary laser-calibrated speaker distancing and angle alignments, digitally-controlled crossover points and slopes for pass filtering, and, proprietary, multiband parametric equalization.

Hardware solutions can include monitor stands, concrete, Sorbothane and other isolation and damping materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer systems and custom digital processors. The PhantomFocus System evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer. Carl Tatz Design installs the PhantomFocus System in existing control rooms and in all studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD.

The company also developed the Carl Tatz Signature Series by Auralex, a family of control room acoustic modules (now featured in a dedicated section on the Auralex website), that emulates the look and acoustics of Carl Tatz's custom designs at a fraction of the cost.

Both PFM monitors and recommended amplification are now available at www.phantomfocus.com, along with full specifications.
