Austrian Audio Releases New Hi-X65 Professional Open-Back Over-Ear Headphones

May 19 2021, 00:25
Targeting critical applications for studio mixing and mastering, Austrian Audio has released its third headphone model, capitalizing on the transducer design developed internally for the Hi-X55 model. Following the on-ear Hi-X50 and the over-ear Hi-X55 headphones launched in 2020, Austrian Audio’s new Hi-X65 professional headphones are an open over-ear design with a high excursion driver to ensure greater transparency.

As Austrian Audio details, the development of the Hi-X (High Excursion) technology results from decades of experience and today’s state-of-the-art technologies, and it’s the key to the detailed sound of the Hi-X65 headphones. All Austrian Audio Hi-X headphones feature a 44mm driver and a ring magnet system, which the company perfected for improved airflow and the strongest magnetic field in its class. The ring magnet, combined with a copper-clad aluminum voice coil, reduces the weight of the membrane and the voice coil connected to it, allowing the membrane to move or change direction faster, providing a more responsive impulse reaction. The result is great bass imaging and superior low THD at low frequencies, a linear frequency response, and open, precise, high-resolution sound that simplifies error detection and makes mixing and mastering a pleasure.

In addition to the large, open and detailed sound, the new Hi-X65 headphones also provide a higher level of comfort, as required for long listening sessions while mixing or mastering. The ear pads are made of soft memory foam and have been completely redesigned to provide more space for the ears without increasing the external dimensions.

The breathable construction ensures better ventilation, while supporting the acoustic design. The soft memory foam padding of the headband has a clever recess for the head seam and thus significantly reduces the contact pressure. The optimal fit allows working on time-consuming audio projects without experiencing any fatigue, the company states.

All moving and load-bearing components in the headphones are made of metal for maximum load capacity. The Hi-X65 has a very sturdy folding construction and comes with a carrying bag. Additionally, with an impedance of 25 ohms (110 dBspl/V sensitivity and 150 mW input power), the headphones will work perfectly with a large number of sources, providing the greatest possible power and headroom from high-end headphone amplifiers, reference AD converters, analog mixers, mobile players or notebooks.

Focusing on working conditions, Austrian Audio also made sure that the headband and ear pads - all hygienic components - can be easily exchanged and replaced, ensuring that the same precision, listening pleasure and comfort remain the same over time.

“Whether for a studio session or hifi enjoyment, the Hi-X65 headphones adapt to any situation. The included exchangeable cables of 1.2m and 3m length (4 and 9 feet) are tailored to the technical data and subtleties of the headphones. They connect with the headphones with a secure locking mechanism. The standard 3.5 mm stereo jack plug ensures the highest possible consumer compatibility, and an adapter to a 1/4” stereo jack is included for professional connections,” the company announcement details.

The Hi-X65 are now available for €349 EUR (incl. VAT) or $419 USD (MAP), with availability in Asia scheduled for July 2021. Austrian Audio products are available in online and brick-and-mortar stores throughout the US. Interested Austrian Audio retailers in the US should contact Brandon Tsaptsinos at Group One.

Austrian Audio opened its doors in 2017 following the closure of the AKG offices in Vienna and set out to create something new, challenging, and respectful to its heritage. The new company started with a core team of previous AKG personnel from management, acoustics, electronics, test and measurement, mechanical design, RF/wireless and software/firmware, bringing 350 years of cumulative engineering experience to the new company.
