ATC Now Shipping New SCS70 Pro Active Subwoofer

ATC, the British manufacturer founded in 1974 by Billy Woodman to manufacture custom drive units for the professional sound industry, continues to expand on its proven philosophy of developing loudspeaker systems from component level. ATC now announced the availability the new high-performance 12" SCS70 Pro active subwoofer, featuring a new sub-bass driver, developed by ATC’s R&D team, and optimized for reproduction of the lowest four octaves of the audio band. There's also the SCS70iW Pro model, optimized for flush/in-wall mounting.

As the company expands, the new SCS70 Pro was designed to deliver the exceptional levels of performance demanded by audio and music professionals and integral to partnering with ATCs range of renowned active studio monitors. Their performance and features make them ideally suited to stereo, multichannel surround, and immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos.

To best achieve this, ATC designed a driver with a 30mm magnetic gap, 50% longer than any other offered by ATC. The long-gap and short-coil configuration takes a long-standing ATC design feature to its limit, minimizing distortion while simultaneously delivering the high linear excursion required to produce accurate and dynamic low frequency output down to 22Hz. Generating a high level of magnetic flux over such a long gap required extensive FEA computer modeling and the resultant 6″ N48M Neodymium magnet is the most powerful ever assembled by ATC and a first for the company.

As well as minimizing distortion, the short-coil long-gap configuration ensures the voice coil remains surrounded by the steel motor structure at all times, maximizing cooling, reducing power compression, and improving reliability. Turbulent air noise within the driver is minimized via a large, flared vent running through the centre of the motor structure, which has the added benefit of increasing voice coil and motor cooling.

The SCS70 Pro subwoofer delivers an extended low-frequency response without employing electronic equalization, simply combining the custom-designed woofer and a marginally larger sealed cabinet volume. The simplicity of this approach reduces phase shift and group delay, aiding the integration of the sub with the partnering monitor loudspeakers. Ultimately, it delivers a more balanced and coherent experience for the listener, extending the low-frequency response without masking details or changing the tonal character in the upper bass/lower mid-range.

Drawing on 34 years of experience in amplifier design and development, ATC’s electronic engineering team also delivered an all-new amplifier for the new subwoofer. The 300W class AB design is hand-built by ATC at their UK facility and precisely optimized to the requirements of the drive unit, resulting in fast, dynamic bass with minimal colouration. Two balanced inputs provide connectivity suited to both stereo and multi-channel/immersive audio systems plus two balanced outputs provide connections to monitor loudspeakers or to ‘daisy-chain’ multiple subs.

Low-pass filters are analog, 4th order Linkwitz-Riley and filter frequency options ensure optimal integration with a wide range of studio monitors. An industry-standard 80Hz low-pass and an ‘off’ option (for use with external processing) are also provided. A polarity switch plus a continuously variable 180° phase adjustment allows further optimization of the subwoofer crossover and a stepped attenuator with a 21dB range provides precise level matching.

The new SCS70 Pro active subwoofer ($5,490.00 list price, $4,990.00 MAP) is capable of generating sound pressure levels up to 116dB (110dB continuous) without coming close to audible distortion. ATC SCS70s can be daisy-chained for scalable performance and any number of them can be muted with a single footswitch. Flexible gain, and multiple low-pass frequencies allow users to optimize the ATC SCS70 in any room with any ATC monitor, as well as universal application with other brands of monitors.

“Billy and his team have meticulously engineered this sub from the ground up, including a brand-new driver with a neodymium motor and matched amplifier to give the active ATC SCS70 the same kind of brutal honesty in the sub frequencies that ATC is so famous for in the midrange,” says Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group, ATC distributors in the US.
