Andover Audio Spinsub Subwoofer Adds Bass to Original Spinbase

Building on its “Spin” product system, in response to customer feedback, Andover Audio introduced a 100-watt subwoofer designed to pair with the original SpinBase Turntable Speaker System. The Andover SpinSub fits inside the SpinStand and extends the low-end bass range of the full system, making the pairing a compact, full-range listening solution. The new Andover SpinSub can also be placed on the floor solo, just like other subwoofers.

The Massachusetts-based Andover Audio surprised us very positively at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in 2019, when it demonstrated a combined system with a mid-century aesthetic, the Model One Record Player. The integrated audio system was a refreshing take for anyone looking to rediscover its vinyl collection, combining a custom turntable based on the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Espirit SB with Ortofon cartridge and tonearm, directly over an high-grade audio speaker system. The Model One used an ingenious six-driver active speaker design, combined with integrated Bluetooth with aptX, and a dedicated input for a Wi-Fi streaming device. This resulted in a high-quality, plug-and-play solution to enjoy music without the need of extra audio components. The Model One Record Player was offered also as an all-in-one entertainment system combined with a Stand for 200 LP’s and a dedicated, dual 10" driver, 150W Class-D subwoofer.

Because of the complexity of the speaker and custom turntable integration in the Model One Record Player, Andover launched in 2020 the Spinbase compact, speaker solution for under-turntable placement, allowing users to use it with basically any turntable. This was a streamlined (lower height) version of the Model One design, using four speaker drivers, designed for 270º dispersion. SpinBase connectivity includes a dedicated MM phono input and a second line level input that can be switched to support a ceramic cartridge phono input. There's also an headphone output.

Of course, the company also offered the Spinstand Record Stand to create a self-standing system with the Spinbase, and now also added the SpinSub, since the compact SpinBase was fitted with a subwoofer output. The SpinSub active subwoofer adds a built-in 100W (Peak) Class D amplifier and recreates the convenience of the original Model One system, with an updated and versatile full-range listening solution.

According to the company, like the Spinbase, the SpinSub was designed around Andover’s patent pending IsoGroove technology, which reduces unnecessary vibrations to eliminate acoustic feedback. This enables SpinSub to be placed near a turntable, or even directly on a SpinStand (where it fits perfectly), without issue.

The new SpinSub features a pair of 6.5-inch, long-excursion woofers, which are said to be more efficient than a traditional 8-inch woofer, and deliver extended bass response with precise control and impact, down to 32Hz. SpinSub also incorporates adjustable frequency (50-180Hz low-pass filter) and level controls to compensate for room acoustics and placement, or to match to other audio systems. An adapter cable is provided for those who wish to use SpinSub with other audio systems.

Finally, the SpinSub is wrapped with premium black or white fabric that perfectly complements the available SpinBase finishes and/or the SpinStand record stand, which are also offered in black or white. The complete Spin product system will sound great and look great in any room.

The Andover SpinSub is expected to ship mid-July 2021. Until September 1, 2021, Andover is offering a SpinBase Upgrade Program to first-generation SpinBase owners who want subwoofer compatibility (subwoofer output).
