Analogix Semiconductor announced that it has now shipped more than 10 million DisplayPort over USB-C controllers and transmitters into mobile devices and accessories featuring USB-C charging ports, even though the USB Power Delivery Specification (PD) and USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification were just released earlier this year.
With manufactures increasingly opting for DisplayPort over USB-C for their flagship smartphones due to its capability to deliver the highest resolutions at the lowest power, Analogix’s SlimPort branded products have emerged as one of the leading connectivity solutions for mobile applications that require simultaneous transmission of high-resolution video, audio, USB data, and power over a single USB-C connector.
“We’re very pleased with the market adoption of our products which confirms that product maturity and interoperability are key to a positive user experience and a thriving ecosystem, especially in the USB Type-C market which is growing at an unprecedented rate,” says Andre Bouwer, vice president of marketing for Analogix.
“DisplayPort has established compliance and interoperability criteria that make it optimized for high-performance, mobile video connectivity. However, this can be challenging. Unproven DisplayPort solutions may face connectivity issues with the billions of DisplayPort devices already installed in the market. The SlimPort Adopters Program provides an additional level of assurance that any problems are discovered and resolved.”
“Applications such as Windows Continuum and virtual reality (VR) headsets are further expanding the USB-C ecosystem, with a first wave of consumer products using the SlimPort ICs already available in the market,” says Diana Zhang, vice president and general manager of Analogix China. “This is just the beginning, as Chinese smartphone makers see the connected portable VR as the ideal approach for providing the best performance and mobility without the burden of additional hardware cost or licensing fees. More and more sensors and cameras are being added in VR headsets. A connected VR headset allows the cost of these additional VR sensors to be removed from the phone. With SlimPort VR the phone’s architecture stays optimized and smart. Analogix is prepared to support new market opportunities in VR display hardware, peripherals, and content capture with our SlimPort products.”
Most recently, Analogix demonstrated the portable connected VR application with the LG 360 VR headset at the Sirida AR/VR summit in Shenzhen, and the Windows Continuum application using the Microsoft Lumia 950XL at the Microsoft WinHEC conference in April. DisplayPort over USB-C connectivity solutions have been showcased at Computex 2016, featuring SlimPort-branded products including:
ANX7737 DisplayPort over USB-C receiver;
ANX7428 DisplayPort over USB-C switch;
ANX7688 the first 4K 60fps integrated DisplayPort converter and USB-C switch.
The DisplayPort standard is an innovative, packetized digital interface for high-resolution video and audio that was developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). SlimPort branded products are compliant with DisplayPort, Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP), and DisplayPort Alternate Mode over the USB Type-C connector.
