The April 2015 edition of Voice Coil is now available online and in print.

This edition features a Spotlight report on Microspeakers and Audio Engineering for High-Definition Voice Products by Mike Klasco and Steve Tatarunis. As the authors describe, “high-definition voice or HD Voice and related extended bandwidth initiatives are forcing speaker design engineers developing voice communication products to learn new tricks. For almost a century, the requirement for 300-to-3,000-Hz bandwidth for clear speech has been the rule for the Plain Old Telephone System (POTS), but the anticipated proliferation of HD Voice products could make change all that.”

This report on the present and future of Microspeakers for voice applications is complemented by an updated Microspeaker directory, compiled by Mike Klasco and Nora Wong (Menlo Scientific). It is a valuable industry resource shared by the San Francisco, CA, consultant company.

In our monthly column about Acoustic Patents, expert reviewer James Croft comments on the “Dual Resonator Chamber with Variable Volume” - US Patent Number: 8,897,477 - recently granted to inventor Samir Mekid (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia). The Acoustic Patents column also discusses another recent patent, granted in February 2015, regarding a “Planar Speaker System” - US Patent Number: 8,948,441. This interesting patent was granted to inventor Zhijun Zhao (West Bloomfield, MI) on behalf of Harman International Industries, Inc.

In the Test Bench column, Vance Dickason measures a new 8.75” subwoofer and two neodymium tweeters from Wavecor - the new Wavecor TW030WA13 and TW030WA14. The A13 is the 4-Ω version, while the A14 is the 8-Ω version. They are the latest addition to Wavecor’s 30-mm tweeter lineup. Vance also looks in depth at Faital Pro’s HF108/HF108R compression drivers coupled with Faital Pro’s LTH102 60° × 50° horn. The HF108/HF108R are the latest in Faital Pro’s series of Keytone Polymer diaphragm 1” compression drivers, which includes the HF100, the HF102, the HF103, the HF104, the HF105 (reviewed in Voice Coil December 2012), the HF106 (reviewed in Voice Coil July 2013), and the HF107 (reviewed in Voice Coil July 2013).
