Are standard hearing aids a visible sign to informs others that a person has a disability? Are we supposed to have to explain that "these things are actually hearing aids"? I wrote a whitepaper looking at the principles of digital signal processing, algorithms,and software that improve hearing for people with hearing loss. This article is intended as an introduction. The complete whitepaper is available for download. The inspiration for this whitepaper comes from the World Health Organization's recent World Report on Hearing (WHO), which shows that 1.5 billion people worldwide have some degree of hearing loss and 430 million people need rehabilitation services. Shockingly, less than 3% (on average worldwide) use hearing aids.

SoundFun, a Japanese startup focused on designing assistive listening products for seniors will present its new MIRAI curved speaker concept at CES 2023. The design uses a curved frame with an internal waveguide that generates a particular sound dispersion. The company says the MIRAI speaker makes it easier for people with hearing loss to hear critical sources such as TV dialogue. SoundFun will be part of the Japan Pavilion @Eureka Park.

Australian hearable pioneers Nuheara announced that the company has received the "historic and first of its kind" FDA 510(k) premarket clearance for both an 874.3325 Self-fitting Hearing Aid and the 800.30 Over The Counter (OTC) hearing aid classification. The Sennheiser RS 120-W wireless on-ear headphones are therefore the first in the market to support the updated Bluetooth specifications and offer no less than three different sound modes, working with advanced LE audio transmission to enhance one of the oldest concepts in the brand's portfolio.
