Market research firm Futuresource Consulting released its latest Headphone Market Insights Report which highlights how consumer demand for 'true wireless' headphones was up 182% in Q4 2018. The global headphones market continued its meteoric rise in Q4 2018, with revenue growth outpacing unit shipments by a substantial margin. The firm’s latest headphones tracking quarterly report reveals worldwide Q4 headphones shipments grew by 5.5% in units and 54% in revenues year-on-year.

USB Promoter Group Announces USB4 Specification Based on Thunderbolt Protocol to Extend USB Type-C Performance

In a surprising announcement, the USB Promoter Group announced the pending release of the USB4 specification, a major update to deliver the next generation USB architecture that compliments and builds on the existing USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 architectures. The USB4 architecture is based on the Thunderbolt protocol specification contributed by Intel Corporation. It doubles the bandwidth of USB and enables multiple simultaneous data and display protocols, increasing compatibility among USB Type-C connector-based products.

Strategy Analytics: 2018 Global Smart Speaker Sales Reached 86.2 Million Units on Back of Record Q4

The final results are in and they confirm that smart speakers were the hottest consumer electronics product in 2018. Strategy Analytics’ latest research shows that Q4 shipments grew 95% to 38.5 million units. This was more than the entire 2017 total and brought the 2018 tally to 86.2 million units. Amazon and Google enjoyed a particularly strong quarter thanks to the popularity of their low-cost Echo Dot and Home Mini speakers and both companies recorded quarter-on-quarter increases in market share.

The new report from Juniper has found that there will be an estimated 417 million hearables in use by 2022. This includes fitness-focused devices, hearing augmentation and purely audio-focused devices.

Naim confirmed that the Mu-so Qb (compact all-in-one speaker) update is now available, followed by the Mu-so (full size all-in-one speaker) update. The Naim Uniti range (2018-19 EISA award winner) will update with AirPlay 2 at the end of November 2018. With the updates Naim also confirmed that the Mu-so and Mu-so Qb systems are now available in Magnolia stores across the United States, in addition to Apple Stores.

Smart speakers are the hottest segment in consumer electronics, and Strategy Analytics has completed a major new survey of the first wave of users, to understand purchase motivations, usage, satisfaction and ownership patterns. The company's research leaves us in little doubt: smart speakers are a hit with the vast majority of people who are now using them (17% of the US screener population sample). Satisfaction levels are typically in the 90% range, and nearly two-thirds of users expect to buy another one within the next two years.

Headphones continue to be a dynamic market, as average price growth is accelerated by demand from consumers for new premium features and form factors such as true wireless and noise cancellation, which provide further strong growth opportunities for the future.
