WiSA Technologies Confirms Philips and Hisense TVs Transmitting WiSA E Multichannel Wireless Audio at CES 2024

December 20 2023, 00:30
Following the confirmation that Hisense would be introducing WiSA E wireless audio software on their TVs, WiSA Technologies announced an implementation of WiSA E direct from a Philips HDTV to external speakers. Transmitting high-quality multichannel audio direct from a TV enables a low-cost and flexible path for consumers to enhance the quality of their audio system. The 2024 Philips and Hisense TV models demonstrate the ease of implementing onboard high-quality multichannel wireless audio.
Available in a production-ready transceiver module developed specifically for Home Theater applications, and with software technology that runs directly on application processors and SoCs adopted by smart TV manufacturers, WiSA E operates in the 5GHz portion of the Wi-Fi spectrum and is capable of transmitting 8 independent 24-bit/48kHz PCM audio channels with low latency and tight speaker synchronization.

With a synchronization time at only ±1 audio sample, WiSA E features an audio delay of only 20ms (transport latency) at 48kHz — meeting the ITU specification for lip-synch acceptability ITU-R BT1359-1 and system delay requirements from audio codec providers. Best of all, the delay is fixed and cannot be impacted by the number of audio channels transmitted, the distance between the audio transmitter and speakers, or by RF interference.

WiSA Technologies will promote WiSA E demonstrations at CES 2024, including a TV set from Philips, the second TV brand that will showcasing the wireless multichannel audio technology, with the company promising more display brands with WiSA E coming. In this case, the implementation is on a Philips (TPV) Android TV and the demonstration highlights how WiSA E is a versatile software, agnostic to the TV SoC platform.

"We are proud to demonstrate how WiSA E can transmit multichannel audio directly from a TV to external speakers," says Tony Parker, vice president of technical marketing and strategy at WiSA Technologies. "WiSA E can up-level a typical TV's audio capabilities from mediocre to spectacular without an additional HDMI or optical cable."

WiSA Technologies will also show WiSA E implemented on a Hisense Android TV. By embedding WiSA E software onto the TV, WiSA E eliminates the need for the soundbar to process the audio decoding and wired connections to the TV. This saves the cost of an SoC, royalty payments, and HDMI and optical cables.

WiSA will also showcase a 2.1 soundbar solution for Android TV and Android cell phone as interchangeable sources, capable of streaming different video quality audio content directly to WiSA E-enabled speakers with the TV on or off. WiSA E interoperates with all speaker types, including surround, subwoofer, up-firing, soundbars, and smart speakers. Additionally, the WiSA module for speakers supports multichannel audio out (up to three audio channels).

WiSA provides a common software integration platform for TVs, Android devices, and speaker brands, ensuring seamless interoperability. WiSA E for Android and WiSA Connect (intelligent background event handler) combine to manage wireless audio transport over standard Wi-Fi, connected clients (e.g., cell phones, tablets), system notifications (e.g., volume), and software updates.

WiSA E is designed as a future-proof technology, evolving with advancements in technology. Users can enjoy the benefits of the latest audio innovations without needing to replace their entire audio system. Use cases such as headphones for hearing impaired, additional audio channels, and higher performance are all on WiSA Technologies’ roadmap.

"We are proud to demonstrate the future of how audio will be delivered from TVs," ads Tony Parker, vice president of technical marketing and strategy. “Embedding WiSA E onto TV platforms brings cost-effective, cable-free, high-quality multichannel audio capabilities to any TV, regardless of room application, audio decode or price point."
