Voyage Audio Spatial Mic Converter Plugin Updated To Include Audio Unit Compatibility

Voyage Audio, the creators of the Spatial Mic Dante and USB ambisonic microphones, have updated the Spatial Mic Converter Plugin v1.6.5 – a software update that includes Audio Unit (AU) compatibility with macOS software. This makes it easy to leverage the spatial audio capabilities of DAWs like Logic Pro. The San Diego-based company is now shipping both microphones already with the new plugin.

The use of ambisonics is increasing as studios want to capture native material as a full-sphere surround sound format which offers more options for positioning sounds in a spatial audio mix. As Voyage Audio discovered, many of its customers wanted to use Logic Pro's built-in personalized binaural rendering with head-tracking, along with the ability to easily create, mix and deliver audio for Dolby Atmos.

With the new Spatial Mic Converter plugin v1.6.5, Voyage Audio offers Audio Unit (AU) compatibility for both its Spatial Mic USB and Spatial Mic Dante. With AU compatibility, the output from the Spatial Mic Converter plugin can be configured for the various surround formats available in Logic Pro, letting the user mix and export recordings as a Dolby Atmos spatial audio file, ready for Apple Music.

The Spatial Mic 360° Recording System relies on the Spatial Mic Converter plugin to transform the raw 8 capsule recordings from the Spatial Mic USB or Dante microphones into a format suitable for audio production. The software encodes unprocessed audio from Spatial Mic to first or second order ambisonics in AmbiX or Fuma formats, Surround Sound (up to 7.1.4 Atmos) or virtual mic patterns including mid-side for mono or stereo output.

Spatial Mic Converter also includes multiple output filters, created using measurements from an anechoic chamber, as well as high pass filter, gain trim and comprehensive level metering with individual controls depending on which output stage is selected.

"Bringing Spatial Mic compatibility to a DAW like Logic Pro opens up a streamlined workflow to create fully immersive spatial audio mixes using the integrated Dolby Atmos tools," says Voyage Audio founder Colin Ritchie. "With built-in head-tracking, personalized spatial audio and multiple ways to render and listen back to your mix, Logic Pro provides a great entry point for those wanting to step into immersive music, spatial audio podcasting and the future of music production."

Logic Pro comes with a built-in surround mixer, 3D Object Panner, support for up to 7.1.4 and a suite of plugin-ins ready to work in Dolby Atmos sessions alongside the Spatial Mic Converter plugin. When a new mix is ready, users can export their project as a Dolby Atmos file, compatible with Apple Music.

Voyage Audio also created a test project from a concert recorded with Spatial Mic, which is now also available as a free download, allowing users to learn how to best use Spatial Mic in Logic Pro.

This release is available as a free download and also includes various maintenance updates for both Windows and macOS. Spatial Mic Converter is a 64-bit plugin available in Audio Unit, VST3 and AAX format for macOS and Windows. The plugin requires a host capable of multichannel audio tracks like Logic Pro, Reaper, Pro Tools Ultimate or Nuendo. The plugin and demo sessions are available as free downloads on the Voyage Audio website to test system compatibility.
