TDK introduced three new digital MEMS microphones as part of its SmartSound family of products for mobile, TWS, and other consumer devices. The T5837 and T5838 PDM microphones push the boundaries of microphone acoustic performance, providing advanced feature sets in small package footprints. The T5848 offers the highest dynamic range with I2S direct audio connectivity to a wide variety of SoCs, MCUs and IoT processors. At CES 2022, TDK also introduced the T5828 MEMS microphone with MIPI SoundWire functionality, adding 68dBA SNR and Acoustic Activity Detect features with always-on ultra-low power mode.
The new TDK T5837/38 PDM MEMS microphones offer a high acoustic overload point (AOP) of 133dB SPL, 68dBA of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and a wide dynamic range, ideal for environments that shift from very quiet to very loud, such as far field voice pickup for smart speakers and TWS applications with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). The T5848 SmartSound I²S MEMS microphone offers a high acoustic overload point (AOP) of 133dB SPL, 68dBA of SNR, and a wide dynamic range, ideal for applications such as smartwatches and wearables, which need to offer high acoustic performance under dynamic noisy environments.
All three new MEMS microphones are available in small 3.5 × 2.65 × 0.98 mm bottom port packaging, and are targeted at smartphones, TWS earbuds, tablets, cameras, Bluetooth headsets, smart speakers, notebook PCs, security and surveillance markets.
The new TDK T5837, a very low power wide dynamic range PDM digital microphone with industry standard features, combines multiple modes of operation such as High Quality, Low-Power (Always On), Ultrasonic and Sleep Mode, being able to offer a sensitivity of -37dB FS, LPM -21dB FS in High Quality Mode.
The TDK T5838 is a very low power wide dynamic range PDM digital microphone with new Acoustic Activity Detect (AAD) features, offering the same industry-leading acoustic performance and modes of operations seen on the T5837. The Acoustic Activity Detect ultra-low power edge processing feature enables using the microphone to monitor the acoustic environment and wake up the SoC or application processor only when activity is detected. Available with three modes of operation starting at just 20 µA, it provides user programmability to apply various filters and thresholds for optimized performance for each application. Its High Quality Mode offers a sensitivity of -41dB FS, LPM -26dB FS.
The new TDK T5848, a very low power wide dynamic range PDM Digital microphone with industry standard features, features a I²S output that provides high quality 24-bit PCM audio, removing the requirement for a codec between the microphone and SoC/system processor, or the requirement of the SoC having native PDM input/decimation. It also features Acoustic Activity Detect (AAD) feature like the T5838, and is available with three modes of operation starting at just 20 µA. It provides user programmability to apply various filters and thresholds for optimized performance for each application and includes High Quality, Low-Power (Always On) and Sleep Mode modes of operation. In High Quality Mode it offers a sensitivity of -37dB FS, LPM -26dB FS.
"TDK continues to expand its innovative SmartSound performance solutions with Acoustic Activity Detect functionality, positioning these new MEMS microphones as a step forward compared to the competition,” says Ritesh Tyagi, Vice President of Product Management at InvenSense, a TDK group company. “The new T5848 has 68dBA SNR, 133dB AOP, which are improvements of 3dB and 13dB respectively to the next best I2S microphone available in the market. While the T5837/38 add a very high level of acoustic performance by consuming only 2uA/dB SNR in the Always-On mode, compared to 4-5uA/dB SNR by other competing devices.”
New T5828 MIPI SoundWire Compliant MEMS Microphone
TDK also introduced the new T5828 SoundWire MEMS microphone as part of its SmartSound family. The T5828 SoundWire MEMS microphone offers a high acoustic overload point (AOP) of 133dB SPL, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) 68dBA and wide dynamic range, ideal for environments that shift from very quiet to very loud.
Above all, the T5828 microphone introduces Acoustic Activity Detect (AAD) to a SoundWire microphone for the first time, allowing easy configuration within the SoundWire control protocol, including a very low power 20uA general purpose activity detection to a highly configurable voice activity detection feature. It also institutes new submodes within the existing High Quality and Low-Power modes, allowing dynamic customization of mic performance including an Enhanced AOP mode with 136dB SPL, and an Ultra-Low Power mode, with 95uA (the first <100uA PDM microphone).
"TDK continues to expand the SoundWire ecosystem by introducing T5828, the most advanced SoundWire MEMS microphone available today," adds Ritesh Tyagi. "In partnership with Qualcomm, we are demonstrating the advantages of SoundWire allowing a simple two wire interface for up to eleven audio devices, a bi-directional audio data stream, and a superior control interface compared to other digital interfaces."
