Bowers & Wilkins announced the P9 Signature, according to the brand, “its best sounding and most luxurious headphones to date.” Conceived to celebrate Bowers & Wilkins 50th anniversary and deliver a superior audio experience with “precision at high frequencies and astonishing bass,” the P9 Signature headphones are engineered by the same team responsible for the 800 D3 loudspeaker, and are Bowers & Wilkins’ largest over-ear headphone.
The P9 Signature circumaural headphones keep the signature design of previous Bowers & Wilkins models in a larger size, allowing even more space for innovation and effectively raising the bar for mobile performance. As the brand puts it, the P9 Signature “exemplifies all of the acoustic and design innovation skills we have amassed in our 50 year journey.”
Part of the “crystal-clear listening experience” is created through the innovative angled placement of the transducer, which is positioned to provide a more natural listening experience. “The wearer hears sound as if they are listening to a pair of stereo speakers rather than headphones, with a sense of imaging, depth and clarity that is truly breath taking,” B&W says.
The 40 mm dynamic driver features a Nylon damped cone with acoustic coating and a large surround diaphragm with CCAW coil and external large pole magnet. The 22 ohms, 50mW drivers also feature a clever suspension system that enhances the frequency response at high frequencies and allows expanded bass. The aluminum and composite ear cups provide sophisticated acoustic cabinets, perfected using Finite Element Analysis, perfectly complemented with replaceable dual cavity, acoustic air leak ear cushions.
The headband adds strength, but is cleverly decoupled from each ear cup, stopping unwanted vibration from distorting the sound while also offering better comfort. The finest materials have been used for each component of the P9 Signature – nothing is off the shelf, everything is custom. “Every element has been designed by Bowers & Wilkins engineers to work seamlessly together to create the highest-quality listening experience.”
The headphones are crafted from Italian Saffiano leather, using a ‘stamping’ technique that gives the material a distinctive cross-hatch finish. The memory foam cushions in the ear pads help isolate noise from the outside world and mould to the shape of the user’s head over time, providing both an acoustic seal and an incredibly comfortable listening experience.
The aluminum arms were also designed to improve the mobile experience, with a innovative foldable design and greater durability. The luxurious case - crafted from Alcantara and Saffiano leather - is another example of design detail and a perfect complement for the flagship headphones.
A really nice touch are the replaceable cables, with a hidden connector inside the ear cups, allowing the user to adapt to multiple options. The P9 Signature headphones come with a variety of high performance cables suitable for use at home and on the go. According to Bowers & Wilkins, an additional Lightning cable is in development and will be out from early 2017 - free of charge to those that have registered their P9 on the company’s website.
No doubt, the P9 Signature headphones are a bold statement and a fitting celebration of Bowers & Wilkins’ five decades. They are priced at $899.99 USD and are available online immediately on the brand’s website and in retail locations from October 15, 2016.
