Danish loudspeaker innovator Lyngdorf Audio announced the launch of the new Lyngdorf Custom Installation speakers. The new range includes the LS-1000, D-500, D-5 and BW-20 base models, each one bringing a unique concept on its own, as the company founded by Peter Lyngdorf brings its expertise in home cinema and loudspeakers to custom installation speakers. A total of eight models to suit different installations, from a modern living room with in-wall speakers next to the TV up to the largest home theater with a big screen and immersive audio.
Lyngdorf Audio is a loudspeaker company with ambitious plans, even though they are shy to tell the world about their plans. The brainchild of Danish audiophile and entrepreneur Peter Lyngdorf, who began as a distributor of home entertainment components in 1975, Lyngdorf Audio and its association with Steinway & Sons pianos to create the pinnacle of luxury audio in the Steinway Lyngdorf brand are all about extraordinary audio experiences.
With products and sound systems designed, developed, and manufactured in Denmark, Lyngdorf Audio offers loudspeakers and audio components to fit the finest music rooms and private home cinemas. The Lyngdorf Audio approach to product development has always been to implement technologies which are tested, proven, and make an audible and measurable difference. And despite their advanced technologies, Lyngdorf Audio components are among the easiest to install in the audio market, with the additional benefit of flexible connectivity.
Since Lyngdorf successfully introduced its range of Multichannel Processors (MP) - allowing the name of the company to expand to new markets and demographics - the company received a lot of interest from the professional integration segment towards a range of dedicated speakers purposely designed for permanent installation. Using its experience in the development of the Lyngdorf Steinway installation speakers, the Lyngdorf Audio engineering team designed a range of seven different installation speakers to fit any type and size of room.
The first Lyngdorf Audio installation speakers, the brand new D-500 and D-5 models bring Lyngdorf Audio sound quality to the custom installation speaker market. After the successful introduction of Lyngdorf loudspeakers for modern living rooms, ranging from the MH and FR on-wall speakers and BW boundary woofers to the CS-1 cabinet speaker, the Lyngdorf Discreet series expands the company’s range with in-wall and in-ceiling speakers for stereo and multichannel installations.
The D reference stands for "discreet" – all models are designed as installation speakers for discreet in-wall or in-ceiling integration, featuring a wall-fixing mechanism with mounting legs. All models also come with their own loudspeaker enclosure, making system planning and the actual installation as easy as possible, with no after-market backbox or closed wall cavity required. This also ensures that the sound performance is always defined and consistent, depending less on the wall construction and the available space behind the wall.
The D-500 and D-500 Center models are designed as full-range speakers, with two passive woofers complementing the midrange driver and a soft-dome tweeter. The D-500 and D-5 woofers midrange drivers and soft-dome tweeters feature light aluminum cones, and powerful vented magnets. This design makes the D-500 models easy to drive while reaching below 50Hz, suitable for systems without a subwoofer in smaller or medium sized rooms, or as full range in-wall speakers in a stereo setup left and right of a TV.
The D-5 and D-5 IC speakers are designed for surround and immersive celling positions and can also be used as the only speaker choice for smaller rooms. The D-5 IC model features an angled, adjustable tweeter. Together with the square cabinet design, this construction allows the sound to beam towards the listening area, for example when used as height speakers for immersive audio, mounted above in front, at the sides, or behind the listeners. The tweeter radiation can further be fine-tuned after the installation.
With the company's experience in creating speakers for Steinway Lyngdorf reference home theaters, especially the Steinway & Sons LS models, combined with the know-how from the Lyngdorf MH and FR speakers, Lyngdorf Audio's engineers have developed the LS-1000 modular speaker system. Four LS-1000 modules combined create a line source speaker, with each module consisting of four 115mm midrange drivers with light aluminum cones, 25mm voice coils and powerful vented magnets, complemented by eight 1" soft dome tweeters.
Four LS-1000 modules combined result in a line array with 16 midrange drivers and 32 tweeters. Depending on the room width, seat layout, speaker position and screen size, three different LS-1000 models have been designed for the best sound dispersion into the room. The Lyngdorf LS-1000 Left/Right models have a sound dispersion slightly beaming inwards when placed on the left or right side, away from the side wall and towards the listening area, while the Lyngdorf LS-1000 Center has the tweeters mounted centered, leading to a wider sound dispersion equal to the left and right.
The LS-1000 is a very rigid modular construction which minimizes mechanical resonance. The overall cabinet design is slim and very shallow, which makes it very easy to install behind acoustically transparent screens. The stacked modules connect through integrated contact pins, so that no external speaker cables are required between the modules.
Compared to conventional point-source speakers, a line source minimizes the effect of floor and ceiling reflections by restricting the vertical sound dispersion. The LS-1000 also retains its sound energy across the room, the perceived volume level is very uniform on every seat, while the “sweet spot” opens-up in all directions significantly.
With an IEC power handling of 300 watt, sensitivity of 98 dB 2.83 V/1m, and a combined impedance of 4 ohms when using four modules, the LS-1000 is easy to combine with amplifiers. The high sensitivity combined with a line source’s typically uniform sound energy across the room allows the LS-1000 to achieve very high volume levels while sounding very effortless with the given amplifier power. The frequency range of 20,000Hz down to 100Hz allows different woofers or subwoofers to complement the LS-1000 seamlessly, ideally with the Lyngdorf BW-20.
And finally we have the Lyngdorf BW-20 (Boundary Woofer) designed to be placed near the wall boundaries, for example right in the corner, achieving the best bass impulse response by avoiding delayed bass bouncing back off the walls, instead taking advantage of room acoustics. The BW-20 is also the company’s largest BW subwoofer model, extending the line-up of the compact in-room woofers BW-2 and BW-3.
Two high-performance 12” woofers are equipped with large vented magnets, double spiders, and aluminum cones. The BW-20 is a high-bandwidth woofer, reaching down to 20Hz but also up to 500Hz. This high-excursion design allows a seamless integration with any size front speakers and crossover filter type, and avoids any sound performance gap even if the front speakers are not low-reaching full-range speakers. The overall construction with both woofers on one side, closet cabinet design, shallow cabinet depth and satin-matte finish allow both in-wall and in-room placement.
