Lewitt Shipping New MTP W950 True Condenser Handheld Microphone

Announced in 2022 and scheduled to be launched before the end of 2022, Lewitt's new flagship modular handheld microphone featuring a 1-inch true condenser capsule is finally shipping. Able to reject 90% of incoming sound from the rear, throughout the whole frequency range, the W950 detachable capsule can be switched from cardioid to supercardioid and is compatible with industry-standard wireless systems.
 
Lewitt is bringing studio sound to the stage with the new MTP W950 true condenser handheld, available for wired and wireless use. Designed as a performer’s personal microphone, the new MTP W950 ($/€799) offers excellent sound in any environment and has been tested on the world’s biggest stages. 

Designed and engineered in Vienna, and proud heirs of the Austrian microphone technology and AKG tradition, Lewitt is also a manufacturer that looks forward, trying to set new standards in sound capture and design alternatives to traditional technologies. Founded in January 2010 by Roman Perschon, Lewitt combines in-house engineering capabilities that have been demonstrated with a series of truly innovative designs that make up its product catalog. Now focusing on live sound, the new MTP W950 modular microphone combines its studio technology with a series of design features intended to provide superior vocal clarity for artists singing on stage, and improved results for the live sound engineer. To ensure its superior vocal and speech quality, the Lewitt MTP W950 uses a 1-inch true condenser capsule — a technology normally used in the studio. Popular stage microphone choices using condenser capsules, including Neumann's KSM 104/105 or even the more recent DPA d:facto 4018 use smaller diaphragms - 18mm and 19mm, respectively, compared to 25.4mm in the W950. This capsule is a refinement of the already excellent 1" ultra-thin, gold-layered diaphragm used in the Lewitt MTP 940 CM microphone, which is proven for both on stage and studio use, thanks to a unique suspension that provides a high degree of shock resistance and effectively minimizes structure-borne noise.

The W950 takes that design even further with a particular perforated shield that further optimizes the response. A larger capsule used on stage requires a lot of careful design in order to avoid the trade-offs between the increased sensitivity and susceptibility to bleed and feedback. With an extreme rear rejection throughout its entire frequency range, Lewitt says it was able to extract the full sound potential of this new capsule while being safe from feedback and reducing bleed to an absolute minimum, even on loud stages. In the past, condenser handheld microphones were considered a risky business for loud stages regarding feedback issues. The MTP W950 solves this problem by combining the 1" true condenser capsule with an industry-defining rear rejection of up to 90%. More important, the MTP W950 microphone was designed for consistency at each show, rehearsal, or even recording sessions, becoming an instrument that singers can learn to use and grow with.
The 1" true condenser capsule is detachable and compatible with a variety of industry-standard wireless handheld transmitters. And since the MTP W950 features a studio capsule, users can easily bring it to recording sessions as well, keeping handling noise to an absolute minimum while its dual layer design eliminates wind noise and plosives. The optimized capsule placement forgives even the most creative microphone grasping techniques, and high sound quality will be maintained even when half the grille is covered. It will spare many engineers a headache.

To provide full flexibility in all scenarios, the MTP W950 comes with switchable cardioid and supercardioid polar patterns, a 120Hz low-cut filter, and 12dB attenuation to reduce sensitivity and raise the maximum sound pressure level up to 152dBSPL.
