Klippel Announces Software Update and New Fast Large Signal Identification Professional (FLSI Pro) Module

April 9 2025, 00:35
As one of the industry leaders in audio measurement and testing technology, any announcements from Klippel regarding new enhanced features and new products are of major importance to the audio industry. The company announced the release of a software update for the R&D (dB-Lab 212) and QC7 systems, introducing several new features and performance optimizations aimed at improving both the speed and precision of acoustic testing. More importantly, the update features the pre-release of the Fast Large Signal Identification (FLSI Pro) module.

The Fast Large Signal Identification (FLSI Pro) module is described by the German company as a groundbreaking tool for a more accurate and efficient identification of the small and large signal lumped parameters of electrodynamic speakers. By combining the previously separate measurements for small (LPM) and large signal parameters (LSI3) into a single measurement, the FLSI Pro enables a more streamlined measurement workflow.

Key features in the FLSI Pro module include an extended model that includes new nonlinearities, such as frequency-dependent inductance nonlinearity curves, port nonlinearity distortion components, and effective surface area Sd(x) nonlinearity distortion components, as well as an extended linear model (e.g., inductance, creep behavior). This improves the accuracy of measurements and allows for a more detailed representation of the loudspeaker behavior.

FLSI Pro also supports the visualization of nonlinear distortion components, which are calculated as single relative distortion values and spectra, enabling a quick identification of the dominant causes of distortion and providing valuable insights for design and development decisions. The new module also merges small and large signal measurements into a single process, eliminating the manual import of results, thereby accelerating testing and increasing workflow efficiency. The measurement settings of the linear and nonlinear parameter measurements are determined fully automatically.

The new FLSI Pro module introduces enhanced protection limits, allowing users to set a maximum allowed voice coil displacement Xtarget, measured by a laser sensor, and activate a Rub & Buzz distortion limit, ensuring transducer protection from overload. The FLSI Pro module also reduces the test time significantly. A full measurement including thermal parameters usually takes less than 3 minutes. Multiple loudspeakers of the same type can be measured in less than a minute per unit, using settings from previous FLSI measurements.

Finally, the FLSI Pro module identifies thermal parameters, which help to estimate the power handling capabilities of electrodynamic transducers.

Enhanced R&D Modules for Precision Testing
In addition to the new FLSI Pro module, the new software update for Klippel’s R&D (dB-Lab 212) and QC7 systems also introduces significant improvements to the Klippel Endurance Test (KET). This important tool introduced in 2023 now supports laser measurements to monitor peak-to-peak excursion and instantaneous DC coil position, using the new plug-and-play software for integrating Keyence laser sensors. This development enhances the monitoring of long-term testing voltage, current, power, and temperature. More information is in the detailed application note AN83.

The update provides very low-frequency pilot tones to the test signal for endurance tests, significantly improving the precision of temperature monitoring. These tones minimize errors caused by intermodulation distortion. Smooth, fast temperature monitoring is now available across all supported amplifier models, including Powersoft Mezzo and Unica series.

The new version enables local or certified laboratory calibration of amplifier gains and voltage/current readings, ensuring accurate and traceable measurements. Detailed software tools and instructions are provided to streamline the calibration process.

The new software update is available at no additional cost for all users currently running dB-Lab 212 or QC7, allowing users to instantly benefit from the enhanced features and optimized analysis capabilities.

Klippel has announced that it will be releasing a number of product development surveys in the coming months, aimed at understanding the requirements from acoustic engineers and audio product designers. The company wants to involve its users even more in the development process of their products, improve test capabilities, and optimize the performance of its audio products.
