Holophonix is now officially recognized as a ‘technical services provider’ as specified in September 2023 by the French National Commission of the ‘Label Prestataire de Service du Spectacle Vivant’. This new designation allows the Company to provide equipment rentals, technical services, and production services for immersive sound projects through a new dedicated Rental and Services department.
Holophonix develops an extremely advanced real-time immersive audio environment, perfectly optimized for the performing arts field. The company, recently created by Gaëtan Byk in coordination with IRCAM and CNRS research institutes, Holophonix offers a global solution including its own software, plug-ins, hardware processors, electronic devices, and loudspeakers, adapted by many world-renowned cultural institutions.
"Accompanying artists, brands, and cultural institutions in the realization of their artistic projects – and enhancing their sound dimension – is a natural extension of our original activity of technology developers," says Gaetan Byk, President and Founder of Holophonix.
Holophonix's inventory currently includes over a hundred loudspeakers developed by Amadeus, dozens of Powersoft amplified controllers with on-board DSP, several Holophonix 64 and 128 processors, and the entire IT, electronics, software and networking chain required to deploy immersive or spatialized audio systems. This equipment is available for rental, with or without associated technical or production services.
"This new department will also enable historical and renowned technical service providers to leverage our skills, know-how, and products for complex immersive sound projects," says Pipo Gomes, Technical Director at Holophonix. "This recent certification will also enable us to recruit temporary staff to complete our teams as and when projects arise," he adds.
For the past three years, Holophonix has been supporting the Avignon Festival in deploying its sound spatialization system in the prestigious Courtyard of Honor at the Palace of the Popes. The company supplies a Holophonix 128 sound spatialization processor, a tracking system for up to 16 actors, amplified controllers, as well as in-situ calibration and advanced technical assistance.
Holophonix recently collaborated with luxury jeweler Chaumet on their private exhibition "Ondes et Merveilles," staged in their Place Vendôme mansion.
"In collaboration with the composer Miyu Hosoi and the Japanese scenography firm La Boîte, we specifically created a ‘sound corridor’ plunging visitors into the aquatic depths. We had to create a totally customized immersive system, including some twenty loudspeakers, the associated processing chain, their installation, pre-production in conjunction with the artists, and in-situ spatialized mixing with the composer," explains Vincent Nicolas, Holophonix engineer in charge of the project.
For the past two years, the Festival International d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence has been relying on Holophonix for complex and ambitious projects in terms of sound and acoustics.
"To this end, we developed a totally bespoke, ephemeral active acoustics system at the Théâtre de l'Archevêché for Mozart’s opera Idomeneo, re di Creta, staged by Satoshi Miyagi in 2022. A system of almost 40 custom-made loudspeakers was developed by Amadeus and subtly integrated by the festival teams and service provider Texen. Engineers and developers were dispatched by Holophonix to the site for several weeks to develop an innovative active reverberation and sound spatialization tool, in conjunction with conductor Raphaël Pichon and the operators," says Adrien Zanni, researcher-doctor, developer and partner at Holophonix.
Holophonix teams were also present at La Grande Halle de La Villette for the "Sun & Sea" opera which won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale.
"Working in close collaboration with La Villette's teams, we implemented a spatialized system using around 70 loudspeakers developed by Amadeus, a real-time tracking system, and all associated IT and networking components. A team of five engineers deployed by Holophonix ensured on-site implementation, in liaison with the production, staging and La Villette teams," says Clément Vallon, engineer at Holophonix.
Recently, at the request of conductor Maxime Pascal, and Florent Derex, 'Le Balcon' co-founder and sound engineer, Holophonix teams deployed a spatialization system in the Philharmonie de Paris, as a part of the Sonntag aus Licht project – the last completed part in Karlheinz Stockhausen's Licht cycle.
"Our teams were also present at the Opéra Comique for the revival of Macbeth Underworld, a creation by French composer Pascal Dusapin, directed by Thomas Jolly. A spatialized system including some thirty loudspeakers – subtly deployed and integrated into the stage frame and set – deployed there from October 19th to November 14th. Our teams were on hand to calibrate, implement, and support the artists using Holophonix technology," says Adrien Zanni.
"This new department will also provide additional equipment for customers with specific needs, and more generally for anyone wishing to discover the Holophonix, Amadeus, and Powersoft brands, which are key partners of the company," concludes Pipo Gomes.
