Test Bench: Wavecor WF120BD04 Midbass

In this edition of Test Bench - already from Voice Coil’s archives, originally published in September 2010 - Vance Dickason measures the WF120BD04 midbass woofer from Wavecor, part of a complete range of 4¾” transducers, including the WF120BD03 (4 ohm version), which he found to be well-crafted drivers. Both were designed as high performance bass and midrange units for very compact monitors and high-end hi-fi speakers and feature a Balanced Drive motor proprietary structure.

Eminence sent a 6.5″ driver from their lightweight Professional Neodymium Series, the Alphalite 6A, which, along with the Kappalite and Deltalite series, makes up the neo woofer/midrange offering from Eminence. The Alphalite 6A is described as a lightweight pro audio mid/bass driver, designed for sealed, vented, or infinite baffle applications. This month, I am going to review Celestion’s 18” CF18VJD pro sound woofer. The CF18VJD is a high-power handling woofer rated at 1,600 WRMS (AES standard) and weighs a hefty 50.6 lb. The CF18VJD’s features include a proprietary seven-spoke cast aluminum frame. Celestion’s approach for this model uses a vented front plate that exhausts toward a series of peripheral vents located on the top of the back plate with a cone assembly of carbon and Kevlar loaded paper cone and large dust cap. I received a transducer for this month’s Test Bench review from a pro sound OEM company that has not previously appeared in Test Bench — Precision Devices from the UK. Precision Devices sent the PD.185N02, a new 18” high-power handling neodymium motor woofer, from its next-generation transducer range, which features four different 18” models. Intended for use as a sub bass driver or woofer in bass reflex and horn loaded systems, this driver can also be used in closed box designs. This month’s Test Bench focuses on Acustica Beyma’s 12MC500 12” pro audio woofer. This unique woofer with competitive features and performance for a 2,5” voice coil ceramic magnet design features Malt Cross technology, Beyma´s patented advanced cooling system and handles up to 1000 w program power, managing to drastically reduce losses due to power compression. From the innovative minds of MAG Audio comes a new high-power low distortion 21” low frequency transducer, which the Ukrainian company says is a competitive high-quality alternative to more compact and effective subwoofers designs. The new MAG M2108 woofer uses a aluminum die-cast frame with improved ventilated 4.5” voice coil and features the company’s removable self-centering ferrite magnet system.

The transducer under review this month is from the Italian pro sound company, Eighteen Sound. Designated a subwoofer, the 18TLW3000 is a high power handling woofer rated at 1,800 WRMS with substantial features, including what Eighteen Sound calls a “Tetracoil” dual winding and interleaved sandwich voice coil (ISV). LaVoce continues to extend its product catalog now introducing a new 15” high performance low-frequency ferrite driver WAF154.00, entirely designed in Italy with Finite Elements Modeling and Analysis methods. Featuring 1500 W AES power handling and high mechanical excursion, the transducer delivers 97 dB Sensitivity with really limited harmonic distortion.

This Test Bench analysis discusses Celestion CF1840JD pro sound 18” woofer. The CF1840JD is a fairly high power handling woofer rated at 1,000 WRMS (AES standard), featuring a substantial ferrite finite element analysis (FEA) optimized motor assembly, an 18” Kevlar-loaded paper cone and large 5.5” diameter paper dust cap. Pro sound OEM driver manufacturer Acustica Beyma's extensive line of pro sound coaxial drivers now includes the 12CXA400Nd 12” coaxial driver.
