New Three-Way A23-M Studio Monitor Introduced by PSI Audio at NAMM Show 2019

PSI Audio introduced its new A23-M active three-way studio monitor at the NAMM Show 2019. The speaker features a new midrange driver developed and manufactured in the company’s Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland headquarters. And like everything else PSI Audio does, the intent is to achieve the most accurate acoustic reproduction. The baffle with tweeter and midrange driver can be rotated to optimize the speaker’s setup for horizontal or vertical positioning. Combining the new driver with proprietary PSI Audio technologies and Class G/H amplifiers, the A23-M transcends the border between nearfield and midfield speakers.

During NAMM 2019, IK Multimedia debuted a new compact monitor that the Italian company believes has the potential to “re-invent nearfield monitoring for professional and home studios”. Well, IK Multimedia said the same thing when they introduced the original iLoud Micro monitors three years ago, and in fact they did very well for thousands of people who make music and mix on a laptop and need speakers to take on the road. But the new iLoud MTM takes it a step further, using a mid-tweeter-mid design with larger drivers that truly impress, and they come with built-in acoustic auto-calibration!

At CES 2019, Harman introduced the JBL 4312G studio monitor, another modern take on the classic JBL loudspeaker line - which seems to be the trend for the consumer side of the brand in the last two years. Crafted in the mold of the legendary 4310/4311 family, and the more recent 70th Anniversary 4312SE, the 4312G is said to deliver “thundering, clear bass, with crystalline and precise highs, even at the highest listening levels.” We are not sure those would be the arguments that would persuade us to invest in the vintage concept of this high-performance studio monitor.

This edition of Test Bench characterizes the 12FCX76, 12” high-performance pro sound coaxial from B&C Speakers. This coaxial driver is similar to the 12FHX76, where the “H” designates that it uses a horn-loaded compression driver, while the “C” in the 12FCX76 stands for conical-loaded compression driver (the “F” is for ferrite). The 12FCX76 uses ferrite motors for both the woofer and the compression driver.
