The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the prevailing standards organization for wireless power applications worldwide, and NFC Forum, the global standards body for Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, issued a joint statement detailing the intention to work on harmonization and create a new generation of common methods for powering and charging personal electronic products. This is an important convergence of efforts between the global Qi/Qi2 wireless charging standard and the NFC Forum's plans to improve its own NFC Wireless Charging technology.

The Card Emulation (CE) Device class is the first of its kind answering an industry need for wearable devices that provide basic functionality and longer battery life in a tiny footprint while maintaining interoperability with the current NFC ecosystem.

Users who need to charge low-power devices such as wireless earbuds, digital stylus pens, fitness trackers, and other small consumer products can now do so from NFC-enabled smartphones and other devices, just by placing both devices directly in contact.

New NFC Forum Specifications Enable Near Field Communication Devices to Communicate with Broader Range of Devices and Tags

The NFC Forum announced the availability of three adopted and one candidate technical specifications, following approval by the Board of Directors. Significant enhancements to these specifications include the addition of Active Communication Mode (ACM) for Peer-to-Peer Mode (P2P) communication, support of NFC-V Technology compatible to ISO/IEC 15693 and the introduction of the NFC-V based Type 5 Tag allowing NFC devices to communicate with a broader range of devices and tags.
