Fresh From the Bench: APL Virtuoso v2 Binaural Renderer for Multichannel and Immersive Audio Formats

Originally launched in May of 2023, APL Virtuoso is a culmination of more than 10 years of research into binaural audio and spatial sound, offering users the ability to mix and monitor immersive audio over headphones, without the need for complex loudspeaker setups. The v2 update of APL Virtuoso introduced acoustics emulation and externalization, simulating the experience of listening to loudspeakers in a perfectly tuned room.

Genelec has further expanded its UNIO Audio Monitoring Service Platform with the introduction of the 9401A System Management Device for Audio-over-IP Networking. The 9401A adds powerful AoIP connectivity to Genelec’s range of Smart Active Monitors and Subwoofers in ST2110, AES67 and Ravenna formats. With its 16 monitor outputs, the 9401A supports all formats from stereo to 9.1.6, and brings all the convenience and flexibility of multi-channel networked audio to the UNIO platform.

Audeze, the Los Angeles-based planar magnetic headphone manufacturer, announced the beta launch of a significant firmware upgrade to its Maxwell gaming headset, adding head tracking support compatible with the Dolby Atmos Renderer for professional mixing. Utilizing built-in hardware already included in every Maxwell headset, this integration transforms Maxwell into a powerful tool optimized for content creators and audio engineers mixing in Dolby Atmos.

Sonarworks introduced a new product as part of its SoundID Reference calibration solution. The Virtual Monitoring Add-On is a new set of tools that emulates the space and sense of direction of listening to reference monitors in the studio experience, directly on headphones. This way, SoundID Reference can transform headphones into a precision-calibrated studio, ensuring a new type of reference listening for creators working on headphones, in any environment, and allowing for even more creative freedom.
