Test Bench: BMS 4507ND Dual Diaphragm Coaxial Planar Wave Driver

The BMS 4507ND is a unique transducer that uses a neodymium coaxial compression driver to drive a planar waveguide intended for use in line arrays. BMS Speakers patented the two-way compression driver technology in 1997. This month’s Test Bench subject, the 6.5” 4507ND features a 300-Hz to 22-kHz bandwidth (6 to 22 kHz for the tweeter and 400 Hz to 6.3 kHz for the midrange). Thanks to its unprecedented partnership with Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, Meyer Sound realized a rare opportunity to make precision measurements on the effect of variable atmospheric conditions on concert sound reinforcement. Working under the direction of Meyer Sound Senior Scientist Roger Schwenke, a technical team installed multiple weather sensors and measurement microphones during last summer’s event to measure the effects of atmospheric conditions on audio system response at varying distances above ground level.

For this test bench article, I characterized the New Eminence Alpha-5-8 5” line array/column array midbass driver. This a new 5” midwoofer from the American Standard Series, a 24-model transducer line of epoxy-acrylic finished stamped frame woofers and midranges. Applications for the Alpha 5-8 include use as a midrange in a multi-way speaker, as multiples in a line array, or as a compact column PA speaker. Lavoce Italiana continues to unveil the new drivers that it will be launching at Prolight+Sound 2018 (Frankfurt, April 10-13). The transducer company will be showing the new MAN062.00 high-power 6.5” neodymium midrange; a new 12" model, the WAF123.02 with a ferrite magnet purposely designed for mid-band applications; and the new and powerful 21” subwoofer, the SAF214.50, able to offer super high excursion using a 4.5” CCAW sandwiched voice coil and a ferrite motor.
