R&D Stories: The Original Western Electric 300B Vacuum Tube Now Shipping Worldwide

Celebrating the reintroduction of the famous Western Electric 300B triode, now out of Rossville, GA, in this article, Richard Honeycutt asked key questions to entrepreneur Charles Whitener, the main force behind the revived Western Electric venture, which is also investing in new tube audio amplifiers and tube related electronics. While audioXpress did highlight already the 36th Annual NAMM Creative and Technical TEC Awards when those were announced, because there was no actually NAMM show this year (and no actual TEC Award ceremony) we still needed to confirm the 2021 TECnology Hall of Fame Inductees. These are awards also confirmed every year to honor and recognize audio products and innovations that have made a significant contribution to the advancement of audio technology.

The 2019 High End show at the MOC München event complex (May 9 - 12, 2019), promoted by the High End Society, was once again a huge success, with a continuously increasing number of exhibitors (+ 3.8%), more visitors in total (+ 6.5%), more trade visitors from 72 countries (+ 8.6%), and most important, a high level of satisfaction among all participants. For trade visitors, it was one of the world's most significant events in the audio industry, for the public it was a unique world of experiences.

The 150-year-old Western Electric will reintroduce its flagship product to market, the famous 300B electron tube. In time for its 80th anniversary, the 300B is returning to production this year, and the Rossville-based company announced they will restart the manufacturing in a brand new facility. Charles Whitener, Western Electric CEO, also confirmed the company will unveil a new single-ended amplifier called the 91E, as an homage to its famous predecessor the 91A, first introduced in 1936.
