ATSC 3.0 Shows The Way Forward for Broadcasting with Immersive Audio

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) is steadily confirming all scheduled stages for the development and implementation of the most complete terrestrial transmission standard, effectively upgrading broadcasting to Mobile, Handheld and 4K Ultra HDTV with immersive, personalized audio.

The Fraunhofer IIS team responsible for the development and market launch of the Cingo and Symphoria immersive 3D audio algorithms and software solutions for digital audio playback has been awarded the 2015 Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize, awarded every year in recognition of outstanding scientific work.

Fraunhofer’s Audio & Multimedia division has been extremely active in the latest industry shows, promoting the MPEG-H Interactive and Immersive TV Audio standard. Demonstrations at NAB 2015, in cooperation with Qualcomm and Technicolor, showcased the new audio system for ATSC 3.0 and Internet streaming in a complete broadcast chain showing live sports and music productions.

Streaming high-quality audio to the web is now easier than ever with the newly introduced Telos Z/IPStream family of software, hardware and PC encoding tools with support for both Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Apple HLS technologies, using only genuine Fraunhofer IIS codecs and accepting audio input via Livewire, AES67, and RTP.
