Test Bench: Eighteen Sound NSD1424BTN 1.4” Pro Sound Compression Driver

This Test Bench characterizes an ultra-compact 1.4” compression driver design from Eighteen Sound, the NSD1424BTN, combined with the brand's XT1464 60°x50° horn. This driver is driven by a 62mm diameter edge-wound voice coil, proprietary True Pistonic Motion (TPM) Tin (nitrate compound)-coated titanium diaphragm, 3P phase plug design with short openings and a high flare rate to reduce distortion and improve mid-range detail. In October 2015, audioXpress visited pro audio loudspeaker manufacturer Eighteen Sound in Italy, and we shared the details of its modern factory in Reggio Emilia. The article was intended to illustrate the ongoing company's expansion, combined with a bit of its history. A lot has changed in the company's structure since then, Eighteen Sound (and Ciare) was acquired by B&C Speakers, and the faces at Reggio Emilia also changed. The product on this Test Bench is Eighteen Sound’s ND1TP Compression Driver and XT120 Horn. Already the result of the company's efforts in the aftermath of the Eighteen Sound (and Ciare) acquisition by B&C Speakers in 2018. The ultra-compact ND1TP compression driver has a 25mm (1") throat diameter driven by a 44mm (1.75") diameter edge-wound voice coil wound with copper-clad aluminum wire (CCAW) on a non-conducting Nomex former with a proprietary treatment. Prolight+Sound 2019 was a reassuring show for all companies working with Eighteen Sound drivers. The company is now, together with Ciare, part of the B&C Speakers SpA Group of companies. At the Frankfurt show, Eighteen Sound and Ciare had their own separate booth (side by side with B&C), showing lots of new products in all areas of the portfolio. Of course, Eighteen Sound is renowned for its low frequency drivers, and during Prolight+Sound the company impressed with the new 18NTLW500 next generation high performance subwoofer using Tetracoil technology.

This Test Bench examines Eighteen Sound's ND4015BE beryllium compression driver, which was mated to an Eighteen Sound XR2064 60° × 40° horn. This compression driver is available in two versions, a 1.5" throat and a 2" throat. This review focuses on the 2" throat model. The ND4015BE has a 4”-diameter edge-wound aluminum voice coil on a nonconducting Nomex former, a 4" pure beryllium diaphragm with a polymer surround. Now a company under the control of B&C Speakers, Eighteen Sound has confirmed first steps under the new ownership, with the appointment of a new management team. The new appointments confirm B&C determination to keep Eighteen Sound as a separate operation, with Francesco Spapperi as the newly appointed Eighteen Sound CEO, and Matteo Bianchini now in charge of OEM Sales.
