Exciting Insights Into the Latest Technologies

The 137th AES Convention in Los Angeles, CA, (October 9–12, 2014) will certainly be one of AES’s most complete and relevant technical programs. Several of the topics relate to the issues we have been following in audioXpress—from spatial audio and transducers to room acoustics, cinema sound, and audio signal processing.

Dolby Laboratories announced that Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. movies featuring Dolby Atmos soundtracks will soon be available for home theater enthusiasts with Dolby Atmos enabled AV receivers and speakers. Dolby Atmos movies will be available this fall on Blu-ray Disc and through leading content service provider VUDU, the first streaming service to announce support for Dolby Atmos films.

IBC2014, the world’s leading electronic media event takes place at the RAI Amsterdam and will certainly be the focus for the whole professional audio and video industry. Digital Cinema, Ultra-HD Television and Immersive Audio will be hot topics. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) will be involved at all levels at IBC2014. The conference runs from 11-15 September and the exhibition from 12-16 September.

Award-winning film sound engineer Dennis S. Sands has upgraded his private Sound Waves SB studio with a new multi-channel Meyer Sound cinema loudspeaker system for mixing in Dolby Atmos. The Atmos integration using existing components for the audio distribution, processing and monitoring chain was successfully achieved using Dante audio network technology.
