3D Sound Labs Launches Challenge for 3D Spatial Audio Application Development

3D Sound Labs, the French startup and pioneer in 3D sound, is announcing a contest for mobile developers and calls on creative minds to shape the 3D sound smartphone apps of tomorrow. The 3D Dev Challenge summons participants to develop an innovative app (iOS or Android) using 3D audio. Contestants can send their projects until late September 2016. Winners will be awarded a total price of 10,000 euros.

Planning for the 140th AES Convention in Paris (4-7 June 2016) is now well under way, and it promises to be an exciting and stimulating event for the whole of the audio industry.Michael Williams, Co-Chair of the Convention, gives us the update on confirmed activities and interesting initiatives such as the workshops and tutorials on multichannel and 3D audio reproduction environments, along with binaural listening.

Sennheiser's booth at CES 2016 attracted a continuous flow of visitors to its AMBEO 3D Audio Listening Experience. Inside, Sennheiser was showcasing the potential of 3D immersive audio technology, which the company intends to develop as a strategic focus, including a proprietary 9.1 upmix algorithm, a game audio rendering engine, a VR microphone and Venue Modeling software.

The Audio Engineering Society announced the recent publication of the AES69-2015 standard, which provides an important framework for the growing binaural and 3D personal audio industries. The standard, which describes the format and exchange of spatial acoustics files, is the product of the AES Standards Committee.

Auro Technologies in cooperation with several partners demonstrated its immersive audio format at the 137th AES Convention in Los Angeles, showcasing Auro-3D recording, editing and play-back at various demo booths onsite. Fairlight also demonstrated its new immersive tools for audio at the AES, supporting Auro-3D, while Merging Technologies introduced its new 3D Panner, developed in collaboration with Auro Technologies.

Barco confirmed the acquisition of German company Iosono and the subsequent creation of Barco Audio Technologies. With Iosono’s team and expertise, the digital cinema and presentation technologies specialist from Belgium intends to further enhance the immersive sound experience in cinemas and events worldwide.
