Neumann Berlin introduced the KH 750 DSP compact subwoofer. The new model is the ideal choice for smaller rooms and the perfect complement to the, also compact, Neumann KH 80 DSP studio monitors, the brand's first with digital signal processing. Together, Neumann is now able to offer a studio solution with analog and digital inputs and outputs, routing modes and adaptable acoustical controls, with the Neumann.Control app for iPad providing room calibration and configurable alignment.
The new Neumann KH 750 DSP has a unique and flexible 2.0/0.1 Bass Manager allowing the subwoofer to be used in many different system configurations. On the back panel there are analog and digital inputs and outputs, four routing modes - stereo 80 Hz bass management, external bass management, LFE up to 120 Hz, and LFE full range - and adaptable acoustical controls to allow for seamless system integration. The two analog XLR inputs are balanced as are the two analog XLR outputs. The 192 kHz / 24-bit digital input can accept AES3 and S/P-DIF signals.
The newly designed 10” long-throw driver has a large magnet, linear motor design and a very stiff pressed steel basket. The KH 750 DSP features an in-house modeled woofer with Extremely Linear Force Factor (ELFF) that provides damping of break up modes to lower distortion at high sound levels and provides low harmonic distortion even at high excursions, with reduced air noise and improved rocking modes.
The subwoofer uses low heat dissipation amplifiers to provide larger headroom and improved transient response, featuring sophisticated protection circuitry, with a separate thermo limiter to protect the voice coil and power amplifier. Soft clip and excursion limiters increase system reliability and allow for maximum performance from the system with reliability.
As subwoofers are usually placed on the floor, a robust grille protects the driver from accidental damage. The well-braced cabinet is a sealed design which brings the fastest possible transient response. The cabinet also features high density rubber isolating feet.
While Neumann is also working to create control software for other platforms, at the moment, the KH 750 DSP can only be remotely controlled by the Neumann.Control App in combination with the KH 80 DSP. Via standard IP networking, Neumann.Control gives access to the many additional functions of the KH 750 DSP Subwoofer. Systems of loudspeakers can be defined, from mono to 3D, aligned for a good in-room sound, and then operated centrally.
The Neumann.Control app for iPad offers several features allowing users to setup, align and operate the KH 750 DSP and KH 80 DSP even in large setups up to 9 loudspeakers. The app is able to identify loudspeakers and subwoofers on the network that are in the room, assign the identified loudspeakers and subwoofers to positions in the room and offers Guided or Manual Alignment.
In the guided alignment, the user is asked very simple questions about the room and the loudspeaker / subwoofer position, and then the app adjusts the response of each loudspeaker/subwoofer accordingly. With the manual alignment, the app allows access to an 8-band fully parametric equalizer, as well as complete freedom to adjust levels and delays in each loudspeaker/subwoofer, following the measurements provided by an external measurement system.
Both methods allow adjustments to the bass extension of the monitoring system, defining maximum SPL, and decreasing harmonic and intermodulation distortion of loudspeakers, as well as control of the subwoofer for applications as an LFE channel or as a bass managed multichannel source. During operation, the user as access to daily functions like master volume control, preset levels, dim, mute all, groups, solos, mutes and other system settings such as delay, standby level and logo brightness.
The KH 750 DSP subwoofer, together with the KH 80 DSP compact monitors can be used in music, broadcast, and post production studios for tracking, mixing, and mastering.
