Sound Devices Unveils 833 Portable Compact Mixer-Recorder

September 16 2019, 00:20
Sound Devices surprised the market with its new 833 Portable Compact Mixer-Recorder, unveiled at the 2019 International Broadcasting Show (IBC) in Amsterdam. This new release from Sound Devices features 6 ultra low-noise mic/line preamplifiers, 8 channels, 6 buses, 12 tracks, 6 analog outputs, a 256 GB internal SSD, two SD card slots, and dual L-Mount charging and powering. A versatile solution for any field production, the 833 features ultra-accurate timecode and Dugan Automixing for up to 8 channels.

Like the popular Sound Devices 633, the 833 is small, lightweight, and compact - perfect for bag use. A professional’s tool for mobile and small productions, the 833 has many features carried over from the Sound Devices’ Scorpio, such as Sound Devices’ new preamplifier design, the two SD card slots and dual L-Mount charging and powering. A tactile interface with dedicated faders, trim knobs, and PFL switches makes this mixer-recorder ideal for run-and-gun bag use.

Additionally, the 833 shares the same processing architecture and multiple FPGAs as the Scorpio. This enables the 833 to be fully routable, and any physical input can be routed to any track. The 833 features both digital and analog inputs and outputs, and has multiple powering options, so it will fit effortlessly into any existing field production kit.

A built-in three band EQ may be set to either pre- or post-fade for each channel to tackle any problems directly on-set. Users can enable Dugan Automixing to automatically attenuate unused microphones in multi-microphone applications, and up to 8 channels can be automixed at a time, and two separate groups can be mixed simultaneously.
Dedicated coms and slate allows for professional bi-directional communication with other crew members. The user can send customized mixes to the camera or crew with multiple mix buses. With the ability to record to three media simultaneously, it is possible to turn over SD cards to production at the end of the day while keeping a backup on the internal 256 GB SSD.

The 833 may be controlled via the companion Android app, SD-Remote, which features transport controls, metering, and sound reports. For an instant mobile workstation, users can also choose from one of several supported USB control surfaces for remote fader and transport control. The 833 offers USB-A and USB-C ports for remote control, linear fader control via MCU, keyboard, and file transfer.

Strong 2019 Portfolio
Sound Devices has had a prolific year for product announcements. The second generation of Sound Devices’ award-winning MixPre Series, the MixPre II Series, was announced and began shipping in late August. All models feature 32-bit float recording, internal timecode generation, sample rates of up to 192 kHz, and an astounding 142 dB of dynamic range.

The Scorpio premium portable mixer-recorder was announced earlier this year at NAB 2019. With 16 mic/line preamplifiers, 32 channels, 36 tracks, 32 channels of Dante, and 16 channels of Dugan Automixing, Scorpio is the most powerful product ever designed by Sound Devices.

In addition, Sound Devices has recently partnered with Sony to add SuperSlot compatibility to the new Sony DWR-S03D Digital Wireless Receiver. The DWR-S03D joins other RF receivers from Audio Limited, Wisycom, Sennheiser, and Lectrosonics in implementing SuperSlot compatibility. The new Sony, and other SuperSlot receivers, may be used with the Sound Devices Scorpio mixer-recorder and the SL-6 wireless distribution and powering system. The new Sony receiver is expected to ship later this year.
