Riedel Communications Reinforces Market Reach with ASL and DELEC Acquisitions

In the digital/IP age, the intercom market expanded also into media distribution and infrastructure. The companies who understood that strategic reach are now the dominant players. Following several other acquisitions in the intercom segment, at the IBC 2016 show, Riedel Communications announced the acquisition of ASL Intercom BV, from The Netherlands and DELEC Audio und Videotechnik, from Germany. With those acquisitions, Riedel essentially expanded its engineering resources considerably.

Thomas Riedel shared its vision of an increasingly complex but convergent IP future at IBC 2016.

Riedel Communications is headquartered in Wuppertal, Germany and employs over 450 people in 19 locations throughout Europe, Australia, Asia, and the Americas. Riedel designs, manufactures, and distributes pioneering real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks for broadcast, pro audio, event, sports, theater, and security applications. The company also provides rental services for radio and intercom systems, event IT solutions, fiber backbones, and wireless signal transmission systems that scale easily for events of any size, anywhere in the world.

ASL Intercom BV, is a manufacturer of rugged, reliable, and flexible high-quality communications systems for event production, broadcast, and related applications. The company’s flagship FLEXUS intercom system is notable for allowing multiple AoIP standards — Dante/AES67/AVB and Ravenna — to coexist within a single system. Based in Utrecht, ASL Intercom is particularly known for its strong analogue intercom systems which, two decades since the introduction of digital alternatives, remain extremely popular in live music events and theater.

“ASL Intercom has a strong portfolio in partyline technology, and the company’s products adapt readily to a wide variety of applications,” explains Thomas Riedel, the founder and CEO of Riedel Communications. “Intercom applications remain a core element of our business, and we are confident that we will quickly be able to leverage the complementary technologies of ASL Intercom to serve an even broader array of customers that can benefit from exceptional communications systems.”

Headquartered in Utrecht, ASL Intercom was established in 1985 by current Managing Director Eric de Bruyn. ASL Intercom’s impressive slate of technology deployments includes projects with the National Opera Netherlands, Schiller Theater Berlin, and the new Tivoli Vredenburg venue, Netherlands’ largest live music venue.

Given the strong reputation of ASL Intercom and its high-quality, European-built products, Riedel Communications will maintain the ASL Intercom brand identity going forward, and de Bruyn will stay on in his current role. “Riedel Communications is dedicated to quality, innovation, and service, and we are confident that ASL Intercom’s technology and customers will be in good hands,” de Bruyn said. “The joining of our companies presents exciting opportunities for everyone involved.”

Riedel Communications also acquired DELEC Audio- und Videotechnik GmbH, a developer and manufacturer of high-quality digital intercom and communication systems that feature advanced Dante capabilities. Since it was established in 1988, DELEC has evolved into a supplier of digital intercom and communication systems to broadcasters all over the world, in both fixed installations and outside broadcasts. The flexibility, comprehensive functionality, and compact dimensions of DELEC products — most notably the company’s Oratis intercom systems, Unito Dante audio networking interfaces, and digital PA systems — make them ideal for stage-management and intercom systems at many large venues for live entertainment productions.

The former DELEC headquarters at Eisenberg, Germany, are now an extension of Riedel Communications.

“Since 1998 DELEC has been known for its visionary ideas and strong technology. And the company’s products complement and augment the Riedel portfolio in a way that will bring even greater versatility to our customers,” says Thomas Riedel. “The entire DELEC team will become part of the Riedel family, and this is exciting news not only in terms of our ongoing development of Dante solutions, but also for our growing customer base. Together, we are better positioned than ever to provide forward looking solutions that address current and future communications requirements, and we are committed to providing existing DELEC customers the great service Riedel is known for.”

As Thomas Riedel explained during Riedel’s press conference at IBC 2016, the two acquisitions will be handled differently. While Riedel intends to allow ASL to continue its activities independently, simply introducing a refresh of the brand image, DELEC’s earlier acquisition was seen as an opportunity to acquire valuable talent, increasingly difficult to hire, while supporting the company’s employees, facing economic uncertainties in direct result of its parent group restructuring. Both of these moves provide new engineering resources while strengthening the Riedel portfolio of advanced communications solutions and audio networking options.
