NTi Audio Receives Class 1 Certification for XL3 Sound Level Meter

July 23 2024, 00:35
The NTi XL3 Sound Level Meter has received type approval from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) entity in Germany and can therefore be used for precision-grade Class 1 measurements in full compliance with the sound level meter standard IEC 61672:2014. As NTi Audio confirms, this level of certification qualifies the XL3 for legally compliant measurements of environmental noise, occupational noise, and sound insulation tests in Germany and in many other countries around the world.

The PTB Type examination certificate confirms that the XL3 (in combination with the measuring microphones M2230 and M2340, and optionally the weather protection WP30-90) fully complies with the requirements for Class 1 sound level meters in accordance with the standards DIN EN 61672-1:2014-07 and DIN 45657:2014-07. This means that the XL3 can be used by accredited and designated measurement bodies in accordance with the most demanding of national standards and by governing authorities for all types of sound measurements.

"The approval by the PTB as well as the comparable approvals in other countries, are of great importance as they confirm that the XL3 meets the highest accuracy and reliability standards," explains Gregor Schmidle, Product Manager at NTi Audio AG. This is particularly important for professional and official applications where accurate and certified noise measurements are required, e.g., in the fields of legal occupational health and safety, environmental monitoring and building acoustics.

The NTi XL3 is one of the most complete portable instruments, combining the functions of a sound level meter, spectrum analyzer, reverberation time, and sound insulation analyzer. It is recognized as one of the most versatile instruments for acoustic analysis with its 4.3” IPS color touch display, creating a Class 1 sound level meter in combination with the M2230 or M2340 measurement microphones. It offers a complete range of functions and PC software for multiple applications.

Measurements are presented in large digits on the color display, while the data is logged in 1-second intervals and the audio is recorded simultaneously, making the XL3 a perfect tool for an easy investigation of noise complaints and long-term noise monitoring. Additionally, the noise spectrum is measured in both octave or one- third octave resolution, as well as the optional event-marker, back- erase and pre-trigger — all of which extend the sound level meter capabilities for effective attended environmental noise surveys.

At the same time, the XL3 Sound Level Meter is optimized for unattended noise monitoring. The instrument automatically continues the measurement as soon as power resumes in case of an accidental power failure. The long battery life time allows 8 hours with the display on (more if you don’t need the display), and the versatile connectivity options allow online control from any web browser from anywhere around the globe including audio streaming for live listening. A weather station may be connected directly to the XL3, and external devices controlled via the accessory I/O-PCB. For long remote monitoring applications, NTi offers battery packs for 8 or 16 days of autonomy, or the XL3 can be powered simply via USB-C power supply.

All stored measurement data is available in simple text format, while detailed data evaluation and rating level calculations are carried out in the optional Data Explorer PC Software. An API programming interface option is available for those who wish to integrate the XL3 Sound Level Meter with specific monitoring solutions and export select data to external logging systems.

More importantly these days, the XL3 Acoustic Analyzer offers an integrated web server for easy access through the Internet. This enables users to remotely control the XL3 and download all measurement and audio files simply from a web page. The NTi Connect service is free up to a monthly data volume of 2GB.

This is not the first certification for the XL3 Sound Level Meter. Previously, the French LNE, the Swiss METAS, the CPA in China and the CMI in the Czech Republic have issued similar test certificates.
