Nordic Semiconductor Releases Bluetooth 5 Pre-Qualified, Production-Ready Development Solution

August 3 2017, 05:00
Nordic Semiconductor released its Bluetooth 5 pre-qualified, production-ready development solution for building Bluetooth 5 qualified products using the company's nRF52832 SoC. The  solution combines production-ready Bluetooth 5 software - S132 v5.0 SoftDevice and nRF5 SDK v14.0 - enabling developers to design high performance Bluetooth 5-ready products, taking advantage of increased throughput, longer range, advertising extensions and increased broadcast capacity and co-existence.

According to Nordic, the solution consists of the S132 v5.0 SoftDevice, a 20-link multi-role, pre-qualified, Bluetooth 5 protocol stack offering full link concurrency in all role combinations. The S132 v5.0 has support for new features of Bluetooth 5 including the higher speed 2Mbps PHY. 2Mbps PHY offers developers completely new higher throughput possibilities with Bluetooth low energy with the associated increase in data bandwidth. It also offers possibilities to shave up to 50% from existing power budgets with the ability to transfer data at twice the speed previously available.

Other new features supported in S132 v5.0 include L2CAP connection oriented channels, Network Privacy and support for the new Bluetooth Channel Selection Algorithm (CSA #2), which introduces more advanced channel hopping sequences and aims to improve interoperability and robustness between Bluetooth low energy devices in a busy 2.4GHz band.

The nRF5 SDK v14.0 complements the S132 v5.0 with full nRF52832 peripheral driver support. Additionally, there is an L2CAP example for the Object Transfer Service, Direct Test Mode (DTM) for 2Mbps PHY and Coded PHY (long range mode), and a button-less Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) example.

The S132 v5.0 is a qualified Bluetooth 5 protocol stack and together with the nRF5 SDK v14.0 offer developers an ideal platform upon which they build full Bluetooth 5 certifiable products.

"The nRF52832 has been spectacularly popular with the Bluetooth developer community since launch. Many developers are now eager to take advantage of Bluetooth 5’s exciting new features including higher-speed 2Mbps. This solution is available now so that they can build products with a pre-qualified Bluetooth 5 protocol stack and get to production faster and with greater confidence," says Kjetil Holstad, Product Manager Short-Range Wireless, Nordic Semiconductor.
