intoPIX Releases New TICO Encoder and Decoder Cores Supporting UHDTV2 and 8K up to 60fps

April 24 2017, 02:50
During NAB 2017, intoPIX, a leading provider of innovative compression technologies, announced new TICO compression IP-cores managing up to ultra-high-definition 8K video combined with low power consumption for FPGA and ASIC implementations. The cores offer unique performances at a very light implementation cost for handling HD, 4K and 8K content. The technology is particularly suitable for reducing bandwidth and preserving image quality without any delay in new 8K applications.

The new intoPIX cores have been successfully implemented by several AV equipment manufacturers to support next-generation broadcasting services. They enable the industry to simplify the management of Live 8K video production using today’s cost-effective IP networks or SDI infrastructure. TICO compression is today the most flexible choice to manage the colossal bandwidth requirements and to simplify the interface complexity for transporting uncompressed 8K video.

New TICO UHD8K IP-cores features include the support of 8K and UltraHD 8K video at frame rates up to 60p, support for 4:2:2 workflows up to 10bit (other modes will be available in future releases), implemented on the smallest Intel / Xilinx FPGA footprint (no external DDR). According to the company, the new intoPIX cores allows the best quality currently available up to 5:1 compression (from mathematically lossless to visually Lossless), and fewer pixel lines of latency (less than 1 milliseconds end-to-end). The solution also includes a free downscaler to decode 4K resolution from an 8K TICO source without any additional processing.

TICO 8K IP-cores are now fully available for integration by manufacturers and will support zero latency transport of high-quality 8K signals towards 10 GbE and 25 GbE IP networks, or single 12G-SDI applications. The technology is also ideal to power 8K/VR/AR/360° video capture and transmission.

“The release of the TICO UHD 8K cores represents also a real breakthrough, delivering cost-effective high frame rate 8K up to 60p for building several advanced 8K products, including new HDMI 2.1 extensions solutions over IP networks” says Jean-Baptiste Lorent, Marketing Director, intoPIX.

intoPIX is currently one of the leading technology providers of compression and image processing solutions, with FPGA IP-cores and software tools that enable leading edge TICO and JPEG2000 compression applications in multiple markets. As an example of the impact created already be advancements in compression technology by intoPIX, the recently introduced DigitalMedia NVX Series solutions from Crestron are based on the latest generation intoPIX ultra-low latency JPEG 2000 technology, allowing transmission of 4K60 4:4:4 HDR video over standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet with no latency. Similarly, intoPIX' TICO lightweight compression is used for 4K/UHD live production and new IP-based networked infrastructure solutions from leading broadcast equipment manufacturers such as Grass Valley (a Belden brand) or Blackmagic Design.

intoPIX will introduce the latest generation TICO UHD8K IP-cores during NAB 2017 (April 22-27) in Las Vegas, stand #C8526.
