The new Lensys Pro joins Focal's two other professional headphone models, but the new design resembles more the company's latest high end models for headphone enthusiasts. Yet, this new closed-back design is carefully optimized to deliver an accurate, linear response while providing comfort and isolation for professional work during long sessions. In terms of the professional lineup, the Lensys Pro seats in the middle, between the Clear Mg Professional ($1499) and Listen Professional ($299) in the Focal Professional headphones collection.
The Focal Lensys Professional design was crafted in the company's renowned workshops in France where the whole line of Focal products is engineered. The new headphones are able to reproduce high-resolution uncompressed audio sources in studio mixing and mastering work, or for creating music on the move. The closed-back design is combined with meticulous ergonomics, and exclusive aluminum/magnesium drivers.
"Closed-back headphones come with some innate challenges that make accurate, reliable translation a challenge," says Joshua Estock, Focal Pro Director at Focal Naim America. "Low-frequency hype and midrange congestion are typically traded off for isolation. Lensys Pro is an exception to this. They deliver an accurate, linear response while providing incredible comfort and isolation. Our open-back Clear Mg Pro has made its way into the studios and travel rigs of many top engineers and producers since their release. Now they have an accurate, closed-back companion with Lensys Pro."
The Lensys Professional headphones were developed to be a reliable, versatile tool for any work environment. They provide balanced tonal neutrality and serve as an immersive companion for binaural audio applications within a three-dimensional environment (e.g. for working with Dolby Atmos binaural renderings). Their robust design incorporates sturdy materials including the aluminum headband. The carrying case ensures the headphones are well-protected, and the package includes two cables, enhancing portability and versatility.
The Research & Development team at Focal achieved these goals by utilizing some of the company's latest and most innovative technologies. Focal engineers chose a 40mm aluminum/magnesium electrodynamic driver with an ‘M’-shaped dome. Aluminum is used to increase the driver's rigidity and greatly reduce distortion, while magnesium helps to ensure excellent damping. The ‘M’ shaped dome achieves exceptional rigidity creating a linear frequency response and improved sound dispersion. The drivers are angled toward the ears within the earcups to enhance stereo imaging, and the optimized acoustic load at the back of the drivers delivers excellent low-end extension.
Focal focused on controlling and ensuring proper sound reproduction specifically for pro audio applications. Each component of the Lensys Pro — from the cushion's depth to the thickness and type of materials enveloping the drivers, to the composite material of the driver itself — is optimized to contribute to the overall performance and sound quality. Designed for prolonged production sessions, the headphones are lightweight, at 10.8oz (306g), and feature memory foam earpads, providing a comfortable fit and excellent sound isolation from external noise. As flexible as it is solid, the headband is covered with a breathable fabric for extra comfort.
The new Lensys Professional headphones have a US-suggested retail price of $699 and are now available to order at retailers. In North America, Focal products are distributed exclusively by Focal Naim America.
