Amazon and eero announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which Amazon will acquire eero, a company that offers products and services for high-performing, simple home mesh WiFi systems. Eero's products have been available since 2017 and basically blanket every room of a home with high-performing WiFi, earning a 4.6-star product rating on Amazon.com. Apparently, Amazon was excited with the company's next generation solutions, which the company says will enable better connected home devices.

Among the first to market a complete mesh home WiFi system, eero's products also include a digital security service, eero Plus (1-year subscription for $99), which protects user's connected devices and privacy. eero solutions are relatively simple to set up, easier to manage, and improve over time with regular, automatic software updates. Founded in San Francisco in 2014 by Amos Schallich, Nate Hardison, and Nick Weaver, eero’s goal is "to make WiFi so good that you’ll never think about WiFi again."

“We are incredibly impressed with the eero team and how quickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work,” says Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon Devices and Services. “We have a shared vision that the smart home experience can get even easier, and we’re committed to continue innovating on behalf of customers.”

“From the beginning, eero’s mission has been to make the technology in homes just work,” said Nick Weaver, Co-Founder and CEO of eero. “We started with WiFi because it’s the foundation of the modern home. Every customer deserves reliable and secure WiFi in every room. By joining the Amazon family, we’re excited to learn from and work closely with a team that is defining the future of the home, accelerate our mission, and bring eero systems to more customers around the globe.”

eero uses multiple access points that work together as a system to blanket a home in high-performing, reliable, and simple home WiFi. Customers can customize an eero system to meet the needs of their home — regardless of shape or size — eliminating dead zones, ensuring streaming video in every room, and delivering the bandwidth all connected devices need. The latest eero IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac hub features dual auto-sensing Gigabit ports for WAN and/or LAN connectivity, and uses tri-band WiFi radios — simultaneous 2.4GHz, 5.2GHz, and 5.8GHz wireless  — with 2x2 MU-MIMO beamforming antennas. The eero hub also features a USB-C port, but unfortunately this port cannot be used for external memory or a printer, and is reserved only for diagnostics.

The wireless network can be extended with the smaller eero Beacon, a device that plugs directly to a wall socket, uses dual-band WiFi radios (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and features a 10 Lumen LED nightlight, with automated dimming. For smart connectivity, the devices feature a Thread 1.1 Border Router, and Bluetooth LE 4.2.

With the easy-to-use eero app (iOS and Android), users can set up the system in under 10 minutes, share their network, program parental controls, and run speed tests on demand. Additionally, eero communicates with the cloud to receive instructions and updates. This means eero systems are self-updating, self-fixing, and self-improving all the time.
