CMA Audio Announces New Violectric Chronos Mobile DAC and Headphone Amplifier

July 9 2021, 14:10
CMA Audio, the Munich-based company that acquired audio manufacturer Lake People Electronic in 2020, continues to expand the range of products from the Lake People, Niimbus, and Violectric brands. Now, the company announces a first in the Violectric brand, with the introduction of a reference mobile DAC and headphone amplifier. With the Violectric Chronos, the German manufacturer introduces a high-quality alternative for mobile devices.

The architect behind the Violectric brand continues to be Fried Reim, one of the Lake People, which foresaw the strategy for Violectric, adapting the designs originally created for audio professionals, with features and designs also appealing to consumers and music enthusiasts. From hi-fi to high-end products, the Violectric catalog offers extensive options for home audio, including with high quality converters and headphone amplifiers. The company now decided to expand into the thriving mobile audio space with a compact, unique design.

The new Violectric Chronos was just confirmed for the company's distribution channel and is an effort to replace the average-quality DACs and amplifiers integrated into mobile devices, while adding support for high-resolution audio formats. The design features a practical and minimalistic milled metal casing with glass plates on the top and bottom, connected to any smartphone, tablet or laptop via a simple USB-C cable.

Despite its really tiny size, the Chronos boasts a DA converter chip with support for 32-bit and up to 384 kHz digital audio, and the ability to decode DSD 256 material. The amplifier stage is specified to offer 130dB of dynamic range and ultra-low distortion levels that match the best high-end audio systems. The design totally reflects years of development experience in conversion, preamp, and amplification stages, being able to deliver two times 30mW output power at 32 Ohms, or two times 5mW at 600 Ohms, respectively. Enough to support even the most  demanding headphones that are usually beyond the capabilities of portable amplifiers and DACs.

All this, with the advantages of a simple connectivity, with power provided through the USB-C connector - maximum power consumption is 200mA allowing for long listening sessions without draining the battery of today's smartphones and mobile players. The new Violectric Chronos is packed with three short USB-C connection cables, terminal with USB-C, Micro USB and Lightning connectors on the other hand for all the options. Chronos will not require installation of any drivers and is instantly recognized as an audio device by iOS, Windows 10 and macOS, and some Android devices.

The elegant housing of the Violectric Chronos will perfectly matching the styling of modern mobile devices, with matt black sides and high-gloss polished edges and the top and bottom glass plates that also serve as playback mode indicators. The device logo will glow green for PCM and blue for DSD-playback. The only available buttons on the side are used to control the volume.

According to CMA Audio, the Violectric Chronos DAC and headphone amplifier will be available during the month of July 2021 from select retailers for just $199 EUR (retail price in USD to be confirmed).
