Wathen Speakers Introduces Cryotone Tubes at Summer NAMM

Texas-based Wathen Speakers introduced its new Wathen CryoTone Tubes at the Summer NAMM 2014 in Nashville, TN. According to the company, Wathen CryoTone tubes use a cryogenic treatment process that is specifically designed to maximize sonic performance in tubes. Developed in conjunction with leading OEMs and VARs, the proprietary formula is the result of extensive experimentation and tests.

As the company explains in the announcement, the field of cryogenics advanced during World War II when scientists found that metals frozen to low temperatures showed more resistance to wear. Many of the early discoveries were more fully explored by NASA engineers who were trying to understand what would happen to metals when subjected to the extreme temperatures of space.

Cryogenic treatment modifies the molecular structure in critical electronic components by reducing or eliminating voids and imperfections in the material. The process relieves stresses and normalizes (or stabilizes) welded and soldered areas.
Stock audio components contain internal stresses that degrade sonic performance. Not only is the raw stock subject to residual stresses from fabrication, but additional steps in the manufacturing process produce added stress lines.

According to Wathen, the benefits of Wathen CryoTone include expanded dynamic range with smoother and more refined high-frequency range and increased bass definition and articulation. The Wathen CryoTone manufacturing process also enables deeper and more focused three dimensional soundstage with a lowered dynamic noise floor and reduced microphonics with lower operating temperatures and extended tube life.

Wathen Speakers is a family owned business from Houston, Texas, designing and building high end speakers and monitors, preamplifiers and power amps.
