Another valuable Spotlight article is Mike Klasco’s overview of Integrated Amplified Speaker Solutions. As he explains, the audio business has dramatically changed over the years and the market for what was once commonly called “audio components” has been replaced by integrated solutions packaged as finished goods. Mike Klasco reviews the evolution in this product-segment, from early integrated receivers to soundbars and modern enclosures, integrating DSP, amplifiers, and current streaming and wireless technologies.

In Acoustic Patents, James Croft reviews two related patents for a new type of subwoofer architecture. The first is intended for use in an automobile and the second, for use in a domestic listening room. The first patent in review relates to an “Acoustical Window Assembly for Vehicle,” awarded to Darin J. Snider (Holland, MI), Greg Rizzo (Bruce, MI), and Mats Olle Gustavsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) from assignee Magna International, Inc. (Aurora, CA), granted June 2013. The second patent describes a home-theater solution using essentially the same concept, adapted to one or more windows of a domestic listening room, instead of the rear automobile window. This second patent was awarded to Darin J. Snider (Holland, MI) and Gregory D. Rizzo (Bruce, MI) also from Magna International, Inc. and granted in December 2012.
In Test Bench, Vance Dickason carefully examines two pro sound transducers. The first is the PD.185N02, a new 18” high-power handling neodymium motor woofer, from a pro sound OEM that has not previously appeared in Test Bench, Precision Devices from the UK. The second driver is the recently released FTX0820, an 8” coax woofer/compression driver from Celestion, which is another UK OEM.
