This month’s Test Bench is completely dedicated to home audio drivers from Dayton Audio, SB Acoustics, and Wavecor. All three transducers are intended for home audio applications. From Dayton Audio, Vance examines the new ES140Ti-8 5.5” midwoofer, which is another model from its new Esoteric line. From SB Acoustics, the tests focus on the SB65WBAC25-4, a new 2.5” full-range device. And, Wavecor sent the TW030WA12, a new 30-mm cloth waveguide loaded tweeter. These are three great solutions for new consumer product designs.
Our Acoustic Patents column, by James Croft (Croft Acoustical) discusses a “Loudspeaker for Eliminating a Frequency Response Dip” granted in November 12, 2014 to Harman International Industries, describing “a speaker system that includes a speaker enclosure having a front end, a rear end, and a first transducer. The front end is arranged to face a listening area. The rear end is arranged for being mounted to a mounting surface. The first transducer is positioned within the speaker enclosure for facing into the mounting surface such that the first loudspeaker transmits acoustic energy from the rear end towards the mounting surface to prevent a frequency-response dip with the transmitted acoustic energy.”
A second review focuses on a “Single Enclosure Surround Sound Loudspeaker System and Method” claimed by Polk Audio and granted in May 17, 2012. The patent describes “a single-enclosure loudspeaker system that projects multichannel surround sound into a listener’s room, and so replaces multiple conventional surround channel loudspeakers.” The patent also describes, in one embodiment of the invention, that the “surround channel program material is pre-processed by an integrated wireless transmission device that performs certain digital signal processing and channel mixing steps in advance of wireless surround signal broadcast to a receiver.”
