German audio analysis experts, Celemony, announced a new version of its Capstan software solution for the removal of wow and flutter. Capstan has received an update to Version 1.2 and now operates optionally in higher resolution, which as audio professionals know well, the more the better during production and audio manipulation stages.
With the free update to Version 1.2, Capstan offers an optional High-Resolution Mode that increases the resolution of the audio analysis by a factor of 4. This allows flutter frequencies up to 14 Hz to be eliminated, at the same time increasing still further the accuracy of the processing.
Capstan is based on Celemony's patented DNA Direct Note Access technology. Since it is capable of detecting wow and flutter from the music itself – regardless of the medium (magnetic tape, vinyl, etc.) – Capstan is superior to other solutions that rely on reading the bias, because Capstan still functions even if the tape has been copied several times or digitized at low sampling rates. Capstan is used worldwide by classic labels as well as renowned mastering and restoration studios, broadcasters and archivists, having proved its worth on numerous occasions through the rescuing of valuable historical recordings.
Introduced in 2011, Capstan runs on Mac or PC and requires no additional hardware and is able to handle all common audio formats, working with mono, stereo, multi-channel or multi-track recordings. Detection based on Celemony’s patented DNA Direct Note Access technology allows correction through varispeed – guaranteed free from artifacts. The Capstan algorithm is capable of recognizing not only the smallest amounts of wow and flutter but also continuous speed variations within the musical material. It allows detailed editing that extends even to letting users draw in the curve by hand. Capstan’s detection of notes and their deviations is based on the patented DNA Direct Note Access technology made famous by the Melodyne software, which is used in major studios the world over for the editing of pitch and timing.
DNA Direct Note Access technology, pioneered by Melodyne’s inventor, Peter Neubäcker, allows tracking individual notes in polyphonic material, which in turn allows notes to be identified and edited. The unique access that Melodyne has long offered to the pitch, timing, duration and other parameters of notes in monophonic material is extended – through DNA – to include notes forming part of chords. Celemony also developed ARA Audio Random Access technology, a pioneering extension for audio plug-in interfaces. ARA was developed together with Presonus and allows a DAW and plug-in to exchange information about the audio file, tempo, pitch, rhythm and more. The plug-in is closer to what’s going on in the DAW and therefore runs smoothly and efficiently.
Melodyne editor, assistant and essential from Version 1.3 upwards can be operated with ARA in Presonus Studio One 2 and from Version 2.1.1 upwards also in Cakewalk Sonar X3 and Tracktion 5.
Capstan can be used for only US$/Euros 199 for five days, whilst a permanent license costs US$ 4,458/Euros 3,790.
