Initially inspired by deaf music fans, M:NI's use during a concert produces a dramatic effect for all participants, regardless of their hearing, delivering a shared 'surround body' experience.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) announced the publication of new SMPTE ST 2098 standards for immersive audio, in a effort to simplify distribution of immersive audio, ensure smooth and consistent playout on various immersive sound systems. The Society has published ST 2098-1:2018, Immersive Audio Metadata; ST 2098-2:2018, Immersive Audio Bitstream Specification; and ST 2098-5:2018, D-Cinema Immersive Audio Channels and Soundfield Groups.

TV streaming service pioneer Roku has announced its Roku OS 8.2, a software update for Roku TVs that enables new features for compatibility with upcoming Roku TV Wireless Speakers; and Roku OS 9, an upcoming new software release with a variety of enhancements to provide new easy ways to search and control the entertainment experience. Roku will soon enable the ability to use Google Assistant devices to control Roku streaming. In addition, premium music services Spotify and Pandora Premium support are also coming to Roku devices.

Sirius XM Holdings and Pandora Media announced a definitive agreement under which SiriusXM will acquire Pandora in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.5 billion. The combination creates the largest audio entertainment company in the US (both services are only available in the US market), with more than $7 billion in expected pro-forma revenue in 2018 and strong, long-term growth opportunities. According to the announcement, both SiriusXM and Pandora brands, products, and services will continue independently.

At the recent European Championships athletics competition in Berlin (August 7-12), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) conducted successful trials of a broadcast production environment mixing to both Dolby AC-4 and MPEG-H 7.0.4 channel-based formats with English and French commentary, and English and French Audio Description as object channels, feeding channel direct outputs for an MPEG-H High Order Ambisonic mix simultaneously. Solid State Logic provided a fully IP-based System T solution for the EBU-Eurovision.
